It was a silent call to arms: an easy-to-overlook message urging New Jersey students to take a stand against the budget cuts that threaten class sizes and choices as well as after-school activities. But some 18,000 students accepted the invitation posted last month on Facebook, the social media site better known for publicizing parties and sporting events. And on Tuesday many of them — and many others — walked out of class in one of the largest grass-roots demonstrations to hit New Jersey in years.

The protest disrupted classroom routines and standardized testing in some of the state’s biggest and best-known school districts, offering a real-life civics lesson that unfolded on lawns, sidewalks, parking lots and football fields.

Outrageous! All of the students should be expelled Reagan air traffic controller style. You walk out? No public school for you ever again. Judging from how many people there were, they were probably trying to get out of finals or look for a free day to play hookey.

Had something similar to this happen at UNO a few weeks ago.

CS Lewis was right. People tend to think there's a right to what they're accustomed to.

it's pretty amazing... all of my friends who live with their parents are against the cuts. all of my friends who pay property taxes in NJ are for the cuts.

funny how that works out.

they're all idiots. they don't want to lose their extra curricular activities, then pay out of pocket.

the state is out of money you spoiled brats and this walkout isn't helping out at all.

I don't see any white people in that crowd. Looks like a racist threat to me. Hope Homeland Security is monitoring this.
