<< Despite being 3,000 miles away, Laura Bush fueled debate between administrators and students who objected to the possibility of having the first lady speak at this year's commencement ceremony.

Students in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies met with Dean Aimee Dorr on Friday to demand that she rescind the invitation to Bush.

Critics cited Bush's "shallow credentials" and complained they were not allowed to participate in the selection of their commencement speaker.

..."She was selected for her political celebrity," said Tara Watford, a doctoral student in education.

"The commencement speaker should speak to us based on achievements in the field," she said. "(Bush) has no merit."

Watford then read a quote in which Bush allegedly admitted to becoming a librarian to expand her dating circle. >>

Yeah, I see the similarity between a fruity comedian delivering the commencement address at a med school graduation, and a woman who earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master's in Library Science (the only form of Information Studies available in the early 70's), who was both a teacher and librarian and a well-known advocate of education, delivering the commencement address at the UCLA School of "Education & Information Studies".

We would gladly receive her at the University of Houston commencement. As first lady, she has already achieved more and experienced more than many of the soon-to-be UCLA graduates she will be speaking to ever will in their whole lives.

Bruins, would you rather have the President of Texas Women's College come to speak to you on your commencement? I did at Texas A&M University when I graduated from undergrad. It was horrible... She had achieved a bunch of really boring sh!t during the course of her life... Quite frankly, I'd rather be entertained than have someone artfully recite their CV to me while I sit in a folding metal chair, wearing a ridiculous hat and robe.

In the words of the great Eric Cartman, "That's just a bunch of long-haired hippie crap." They should be happy they know something about the person who will be speaking and that someone of note accepted. At least someone might give a rat's a$$ what she has to say. It will make for a much more entertaining day.

NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE SOON TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE: You will not be inspired by the message given. If you are looking for inspiration, you will not find it there. Go home, get drunk with your firends, and have them mail you your diploma.

Laura Bush was a school teacher by trade. She did not have life handed to her on a silver platter. You are thinking about her husband.

Besides, what does that really have to do with anything? Should there be a requirement to be destitute AND achieve? If that were true, you would have a small pool of people to choose from to ive commencement addresses.
