You really think every kid is smart enough to get a black or gold card?

Actually, yes they are due to shitty regulations like No Child Left Behind. So those who were getting white cards must have really not given a fuck at all. Encouragement like this is good, just like grading teachers on how they do in their job makes sense with appropriate awards in pay. If these kids can't function in high school at a reasonable level, they need to probably get into a vocational school and learn a trade. This is a subject for a different discussion though because those aren't likely provided. They should be, society needs skilled tradesmen at all levels.

This isn't a bell curve or anything. Everyone could if they tried. Not every class is an AP course. I started in HS not giving a damn. I hated my classes and really was learning nothing. In one or two classes I fought through it and was moved to honors level courses, and kept rising. It CAN happen.

That said, it isn't all on the kid, too many teachers are just sucking air.

Competition - the drive to do better isn't at fault. It can very well be GOOD to be competitive. We need to stop telling people "You're special" and start saying "you make yourself special." Meaning, shit don't come for free. Learn to compete. Or learn to fail at job interviews.

But but but, don't you see? I was created in the Image of God and We love me. All the rest is just dust that blows away. I didn't just learn to compete, I died to dust and won. I went for and found the Holy Grail. There is no other winner but me and anybody, especially the broken and dying, the losers, can join us for the small donation of their ego. I am the master of time and space, traveler to the stars, and of course, I'm just a worthless nobody, so don't waste your time in competition, trying to put me down. No effect is generated by insulting a room that's empty.

I don't get the big deal.

my college had an honors program (admittance based on high school gpa/SAT scores, and you were required to maintain a certain GPA to stay in) where you were required to take a few harder classes ("honors" versions of GenEd classes), commit to writing a senior thesis for your major, and in exchange, you got priority registration for classes and access to registration before the seniors even.

Every kid who is really loved is smart enough to give one to him or herself. And not a fucking thing else matters. It is only is self love that people achieve full capacity and whatever that is is all there is to achieve. To be all that one can be is to be everything one can be and to be everything is all there is.

Errr... who thought this would be a good idea? Are the white card kids now "untouchables"?
I remember my 5th grade class the mid-1970's have separated the classroom into Red, Green, and Blue color coded sections depending on where you were in math skills.

No one seemed to mind it then, why mind it now. Dumb should be proud, mediocre thankful, and bright bored with proud and mediocre classmates. :colbert:

Especially if the retardation is due to poor choices on your behalf or your parents. Don't like the white card? Study more, ask for more help, harass your parents to help you do your homework with you. This helps get them ready for the REAL world where how hard they work will play a key factor in determining their place in the world. These are high school kids for fucks sake, not babies. We cannot afford to keep acknowledging failure by bring down the exceptional. The exceptional should inspire, not be frowned upon.

A standardized test has nothing to do with the real world, dumbass. Hell it doesn't even show a student's acedemic worth, what a broken and ineffecient system you Americans have.

Don't worry, if Americans don't want to compete and improve themselves because it might hurt someones feelings,

There are millions outside the US ready, willing and able to pick up the slack.

“I know skeptics will want to argue with the results, but we consider them to be accurate and reliable, and we have to see them as a challenge to get better,” he added. “The United States came in 23rd or 24th in most subjects. We can quibble, or we can face the brutal truth that we’re being out-educated.”
I wonder what color card one would get for being in 24th place.:D

What I think hilarious about this whole stupid plan is that "black" is good and "white" is bad. That's just too funny and so PC. They could have had green as good, then orange, then red as bad.

Idiots.

lol at complaining about being color coded, though I wouldn't be completely comfortable with giving out perks based on it, especially discounts.

When I went to school in Japan in the 90s, they handed back exams by score (students who got 100% got their tests back first, 0% were last) and they would post the rankings of everyone by cumulative scores of the core classes. Not saying that approach wasn't without problems, I think they've pretty much stopped it and now only post the top X people, but by high school you should be ready to deal with competition.

I don't think it's necessarily PC, just following the trend, a la Centurion or Visa Black, or the plain white Costco card vs the darker Executive.

Then we disagree. Try paying attention to TV commercials.

I don't really watch a lot of tv, and almost never commercials. Care to explain what you mean instead of just insinuating?

That actually sounds like a good system; it rewards achievement and work rather than supposed potential. The irony of this plan (measuring IQ) is that if the tests really work, rewarding it would be pointless since it's not readily improvable.

I am not all that certain that being a genius or a C student has its advantages and disadvantages. The object of taking an entrance exam is to Identify what classes they may or may not need to get to college level classes. What exactly is the purpose of this? The only purpose, I see is discrimination.

Is the purpose to give up on all children who fall below a certain GPA or intelligence Level?

Not everyone will need to be a genius in Math and Science. A nurse does not need much math and a police officer does not need much math. However, a carpenter or a machinist may need more math or knowledge in other areas.

Imagine if it had been the other way around. This school policy would of been shut down on day one that it was proposed let alone implemented.

The difference between the A+ and the B+ student is the A+ student gets all the scholarships and the B+ student gets nothing. That shore is fair!

Then just because some student has a low income he gets a lot of state aid.

It is hell if you were an OK student with parents that make just enough money not to qualify for a PELL Grant! There is no justice in this world!

My middle school did this. I think you got a free ice cream or something once a week and you got to go to front of the lunch line. I never heard anything bad about it. This was back in the early 90's.

My middle school had different color-coded "teams" that students and teachers belonged to. They said it was random, but the gifted and talented kids were always on the same team, so it was fairly obvious. They also had ice cream socials for students on the honor roll every quarter.

I think that rewarding achievement is a great motivator (just like adult life). I have mixed feelings about how this school handled it. I think that to form a stronger opinion you'd have to be involved with the school. The rewards they've implemented could either motivate a lot of kids to achieve or breed jealousy and contempt. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but it's based on how the program is presented and understood.

I don't understand why people are against this. Schools have been rewarding kids who performed well for years and years and years. That's a GOOD thing. Rewarding those who perform well (not necessarily the "smartest") encourages people to do well.

Maybe the issue is that these are based on test scores? Our school did it based on GPA, which didn't favor smart kids over dumb kids, because the dumb kids would still qualify if they got a 3.5 or higher in their remedial classes.

Nowadays you can't punish kids and apparently can't reward kids.

I can't tell if my sarcasm meter is broken or not, or maybe I just don't know what you're getting at, but it's not justice, it's equality, and rightly so. Not everyone can be the best.
