McGehee Secondary School is predominantly white, and 46 percent African-American

If the school is nearly 50% AA, what would be so unusual about a black valedictorian?

Well it said ...

"Kymberly Wimberly, 18, got only a single B in her 4 years at McGehee Secondary School, and loaded up on Honors and Advanced Placement classes."

To take those AP and honors classes you can't just be in the lower easy classes. At least not in my school....

we had guys who intentionally took the minimum number of electives as those would only get you a 4.0 with an A, while AP/GT/honors classes got you a 5. valedictorian was decided because the smartest kid in the class liked tennis and took a couple extra p/e credits because of it, getting him a 4 for those. he's a hedge fund manager now so...

A total of twenty-three (23) credits are required for honor
graduates. For a student to be valedictorian or
salutatorian, he/she must be an honor graduate.

I suppose it's possible she didn't meet all the requirements...and just because you have the highest GPA, doesn't necessarily mean you are qualified to be the class valedictorian...

I'll wait until I see some real reporting - that site's been shown to have ZERO journalistic standards.

I'd take a six figure discrimination lawsuit settlement over making some valedictorian speech. Pay up, whiteys.

We had a similar situation. The guy with the highest GPA had to take an art class because the college he was going to required it. The school didn't have an AP art class so he had one less 5.0 class than the number two guy and a slightly lower GPA. I don't really remember but I think they made them co-valedictorians.

In my Highschool AP classes were worth an extra 1 on the GPA scale our valedictorian had like a 4.26 GPA for example (on a 4.0 scale) And IIRC honors were worth an extra .5 possible.

McGehee Principal Darrell Thompson, a defendant, told her "that he decided to name a white student as co-valedictorian," although the white student had a lower G.P.A.

Co-valedictorian?

She seeks punitive damages for constitutional violations, and an injunction declaring her sole valedictorian
"But for Wimberly's race, defendants would not have selected a student with a lower G.P.A. than Wimberly to also be a valedictorian."
So she's valedictorian, just with a white student as her co-valedictorian? And not barred at all? Or am I misreading something?

Predominantly white with 46% black students? I think I know the cause of the problem. The administrators fail at English.

Actually, maybe they just fail at math.

There was an article in the paper here about how the local schools were declaring anyone with above a 4.0 as valedectorian. Between 4 high schools, there were like 40 valedectorians.

Perfect sense in a liberal world.

Johnny could do the slide, merry-go-round and the swing, FTMFW. 4.0 BABAY.

"Defendants did not support African-American students, and did not want to see Wimberly, an African-American young mother as valedictorian.

I think this might have more to do with it than her race. Amazing how the article slips that in at the very in lol. I don't think that the fact that she has a kid should disqualify her, just that the concern of the school is for something entirely different than it is made out to be. They don't necessarily care that they have a black valedictorian, the "big mess" is because they don't want Teen Mom giving the speech. I guess race makes for an easier lawsuit.

The school is 46% black so I am having a hard time believing the school would discriminate against her based on color. For all the high schools I have known, its more than just gpa to be valedectorian.

You'd think that would be more reason to give it to her. Earning good marks in school as a single mother is hard as fuck.
