10 was too long even 3 days is pushing it. If i was the teacher i would have let it go knowing that the kid had a mom in iraq. But some teachers love to go on a power trip. And i can understand how the kid could get emotional, i mean his mom could die any minute. I would be pissed off if somone stopped me from talking with a relative in a war too.

i put money on the fact that the kid was probably pretty calm but since the teachers dont exactly like it when kids dont listen to them in front of others the teacher probably made up the whole profanity thing.

Parham said, however, that Francois? behavior at school has been ?a chronic problem.?

And Francois added: ?I?m not a golden child and I?ve been wrong, but I was right this time.?

sounds like an angel, doesnt it?

well sure...no school/principal/teacher wants to make themselves sound bad in front of the press. but then again...neither of us will probably ever know the truth..dah well.

agreed. i doubt its cold hard facts from the kid or the teacher. i can understand why the teacher wouldnt come forward tho, with all the rabid adults calling the school freaking out, but her version from her mouth would really help to clear things up. plus she needs to nut up and stand by her actions.

usually youll never know the exact truth about what was said in these types of situations as tension runs high and can skew the memory on what exactly was said down to the letter. going on the rest of the details tho i still think the kid was out of line. couldve all been avoided if he wouldve just explained who was on the phone to the teacher, and then she wouldve felt like a fool.

again, she didnt know until after he got belligerent. the suspension was for his behavior, not talking to his deployed mother.

Yup...Sounds like:

Was on phone => Confiscation of phone until end of day
Cursing and being defiant => 3-day suspension
Not accepting suspension, not agreeing to use stop using the cell phone, not agreeing to stop cursing => 10-day suspension

Maybe he should have just been taken out back and beheaded???

Kids mom could be dead tomorrow and there would be nothing he could do about it..

And for christs sake it is a public school, it isn't like they actually learn anything there.

im sure the lack of any real details in this story is intentional. if the kid was being a punk, then everyone would most like agree that he deserved the punishment and there would be no controversy. no controversy, no news.

This version of the story has slightly better details:
The incident happened when [Kevin] Francois received a call from his mother at 12:30 p.m., which he said was his lunch break. Francois said he went outside the school building to get a better reception when his mother called. A teacher who saw Francois on his phone told him to get off the phone. But he didn't....

Francois said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."

Francois said the teacher tried to take the phone, causing it to hang up.

The student said he then went with the teacher to the school's office where he surrendered his phone. His mother called again at 12:37 p.m. and left a message scolding her son about hanging up and telling him to answer the phone when she calls....

"Kevin got defiant and disorderly with [assistant principal Wendall] Turner and another assistant principal," [Assistant Principal Alfred] Parham said Thursday. "He got defiant with me. He refused to leave Mr. Turner's office....

Parham said the student used profanity when he was taken into the office. He said he tried to work out something with the student. But Francois said he was too frustrated he couldn't answer the phone when his mother called him the second time.

"I even asked Kevin, 'You know we can try to work something out to where if your mother wants to call you she can call you at the school,'" Parham said. "So we've tried to work with Kevin and we're going to continue to try to work with Kevin and his mother and his relatives. In the course of good order and discipline, we have to abide by our policy."

I'd kick the teachers ass for a nickle

School Reduces Suspension Over Iraq Call

Following hundreds of angry phone calls and e-mails, school officials in this Army base city have reduced a suspension imposed on a student who wouldn't give up his cell phone while talking to his mom ? a sergeant on duty in Iraq...

The boy said he had not expected the call from his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, who left in January for a one-year tour.

The teacher says the confrontation happened in a hallway, not outside, and that Francois never said the call was with his mother....

The punishment for violating that policy is that the phone is confiscated until the end of the day. But Francois was suspended for cursing and being defiant, said Parham. That was extended to 10 because "he did not want to accept the three-day suspension and to agree that he would not use the cell phone openly or curse."...

"We are the school that serves Fort Benning," Turner said. "We're well aware of students with parents overseas."

Key new details are that the teacher disagrees with his story, Assistant Principal Parham talks about the steps that led to the 10-day suspension, and that the school is in an Army town so that there are likely hundreds of kids on the rolls with a parent in Iraq.

Teachers and assistant principals never lie.....

looks like they got together and came up with a better "story" after the real story leaked.

Why is this story even news?

It's not like this kid will never hear from his mother again. Momma needs to not call him at school. How about calling him at dinner time or in the morning before school? Or on the weekend?

And the kid knows it's against the rules to have cellphones at school and yet breaks the rules because he thinks he's entitled to special treatment and is a belligerent @sshole to boot.

Again, this shouldn't even be news.

If I was the boy, I would've done the same and it really depends on my reaction as to what kind of punishment I'll get. If he was calm about it, they've might of understood which I doubt he was. That's why he got the harsh punishment.

But if he was an a$$hole about it and truly using profanity and being defiant, then he deserved it.

Maybe the teacher wouldn't listen/believe him. I would have just walked outside the school.

Anyway, hard to know what truly happened.

When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."

Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.

"Kevin got defiant and disorderly," Parham said. "When a kid becomes out of control like that they can either be arrested or suspended for 10 days. Now being that his mother is in Iraq, we're not trying to cause her any undue hardship; he was suspended for 10 days."

Apparently the teacher insisted he hang up.

Hence the verbal retorts. Personally I think I would have beat the assh0le senseless.

the fact they even mentioned 'well, lookie here, we'd coulda arrested him' is sick.

real tough guys.

The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was "defiant and disorderly" and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.

The confrontation Wednesday began after the 17-year-old junior got a call at lunchtime from his mother, Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates, who left in January for a one-year tour with the 203rd Forward Support Battalion.

Cell phones are allowed on campus but may not be used during school hours. When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom."

it is the south, people there tend to walk around with giant rods in their asses. i would definitely have let the student finish the conversation at least.
