yes. you really should consider buying your software. most schools offer good discounts. or you can just type in academic software in your favorite search engine as the above site only allows discounts to certain schools. if you were in CA castudentbuys.org is where i used to buy MS software

I think you can buy it directly from Microsoft, but you'll have to supply documentation proving that you are a student.

in the UK, the way that it used to work was that you would buy an empty box from any supplier at a special student price, and then send off a form by post or on the web to Microsoft, who would then send you the FULL product, even if you only ordered the upgrade. cool. i bought win2k for £37. nice.
