Angry Mom Wants Suspension Expunged

BOSTON -- A Billerica, Mass., mother is furious after her 14-year-old daughter was suspended for a day from her middle school for wearing a T-shirt that said "SOPHOMORE 69."

Christina Morrison, an eighth-grader at the Marshall Middle School, was sent to the office Tuesday when she arrived at school wearing the shirt. The assistant principal told Morrison and her stepfather that the shirt was "sexually explicit," and that she was being suspended for the day, the Lowell Sun reported.

The teen said she felt like crying because she only wore the shirt she'd recently purchased from a store called Urban Behavior because she liked it.

The school principal, Roland Boucher, said he wouldn't talk about the specific incident, but added that the school's dress code prohibits "any clothing that displays offensive language or images or suggests inappropriate or illegal behavior is not allowed in school."

An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts said she believes such a dress-code clause would violate the state's Student Free Expression Act, which "protects even speech that could be considered 'vulgar, lewd or offensive' as long as it is not disruptive.

Morrison's mother, Kimberly Cifelli, said the school should apologize to her daughter and wants the suspension expunged from Morrison's record. She said she cannot imagine how the school can say the shirt is sexually explicit.

Is the mother really that naive? 😕

The attorney for the ACLU is an idiot if she doesn't think such a shirt is disruptive. As a math teacher, I run into that number as a solution to math problems every once in a while. It's almost always disruptive with freshmen.

I agree:

65, 66, 67, 68, 70

Much better!

P.S. Any attractive ladies what find out what the 33 is? If so meet me in L&R!

Well, the principal obviously has a dirty mind.
If he sees the number 69 and thinks "sexual" thats his problem.
The girl is not offering any more sexual encouragement than an average 8th grader already has floating around inside their system, which is TONS.

EDIT:
Just to drive the point home, she should wear a plain shirt that looks like this:

Then when the school gets pissed off, ask them to make up their freaking mind.

Maybe they should have done this instead.

69! :giggle:

While most of the shirts at say Tshirt Hell are even more offensive, quite a few that could be deemed inappropriate were worn at my high school with no problem. Obviously there is a line that is easily crossed, but wearing a shirt that simply says 69 on it? Wow, no harm is done with that. People know what it means, and will laugh at it, but it's not going to cause problems. I can't see how it would be offensive or would disrupt anything. What kids say in class or in the hallway can be far more disruptive than a tshirt with 69 on it. Now, if it had stick people depicting 69, I could see how it would need to be dealt with. But at our school, they simply made someone wear a rather baggy tshirt with something about the school on it. Nobody was ever sent home unless they raised hell in the dean's office. Oh, the days of working as an office runner my senior year. Got to sit in the office and deliver pink slips to kids to make them come down to the office. Got to enjoy much entertainment as kids raised hell in their assistant dean's office. 😀

Know why 77 is better than 69? Cause you get 8 more!
DAMN. >< MIBTM

suspension for 1 day is totally called for. That mom needs to shut up and keep her kid from becoming a skank

My jersey was #69 when I ran track in HS, had my picture in the city newspaper wearing it several times, everyone got a kick out of seeing that. I had to get first in line on uniform handout day to mak sure I got that # every year.
