A 13-year-old student who wanted to grow a mustache for charity was told by his school to buzz his fuzz, the Mirror reported.
Gus Hooker, a student at Priory Academy in Bedforshire, England, intended to honor his grandfather, who's recovering from cancer, as part of Movember, a month-long initiative to raise funds for men's cancers. As the official U.S. website for Movember states: "Men grow and women support a Mo (moustache) for 30 days to become walking, talking billboards, for our men’s health causes."
But the school ordered Gus to remain clean-shaven because very few students had the ability to grow facial hair at all, and most would be excluded from taking part, his father, Paul Hooker, explained to the Mirror.
Gus started shaving at age 9 and now has to shave every day, according to the BBC. His dad felt as though the school was splitting hairs over a nonexistent rule and started a blog to vent:
“There is nothing in the uniform policy [about mustaches] and some staff are doing it this year, as they did last year," Paul wrote. "Staff can do what they want with no chance of criticism or question by parents."
Gus's school said that even if Prostate Cancer UK, the charity he wanted to donate to, was a worthy cause, it could only back fundraising events that include all students, QMI reported. The academy conceded it had no specific rule against facial hair, but does have the authority to ban any hair fashion it deems inappropriate.
They did allow a compromise -- letting Gus organize one charity day on Nov. 30 in which the students will each contribute a pound ($1.59) to wear a fake mustache.
Still, Gus would have preferred his own whiskers.

"It's a shame because my mustache would've raised a lot of money," he said. "Everyone wanted me to go for it."

A 13 year old boy has been told by his school in England that he is not allowed to grow a mustache for November and was told by the school to shave his mustache. The school said that because most other students aren't able to grow a mustache and would be excluded. He wanted to grow the mustache to honor his grandfather recovering from cancer

The school isn't partaking in this event or sponsoring it, its just this guy and I dont think the school should have a right to tell him what kind of facial hair he is allowed to have. The reason they gave for not allowing this is weak, why does it matter if other students cant grow a mustache

For some reason I am not surprised that this is happening in England, in many areas they are going too far

The kid should be allowed to grow the mustache and the school needs to back off

Do you agree the student should be allowed to grow a mustache and does the school have the right to tell him to remove it

Wow, I can't tell you how little I care about this.

Yet you obviously cared enough to post in the thread

Britain is a country that is becoming more big brother with more surveillance and restriction of freedom. There was a teenager arrested for burning a poppy

This is important because Britain is becoming less free, what right does the school have to dictate a students facial hair

UK + Private School = who gives a shit

Not sure why you're not whining about some of the rules that private schools in the US have.

[youthful whining]Grown-ups are the worst! Their dumb rules and their lame music and they won't even let this kid grow a 'stache! I'm gonna go listen to some Nickelback, because they just get it![/youthful wining]

Awesome thread.

I don't understand how they think 'not stopping him from doing something they don't stop people for' can be considered 'backing a fund raising event'? Hey guys, let's clean our entire lunch plates in honor of starving people that don't have the luxury of throwing away bread crusts. "NO, you er, HAVE to leave some food on your plate because little Ringo is allergic to peanuts and can't eat his sandwhich! If everyone can't do it, NO ONE CAN!!11!!1"

How the fuck does growing a Mustache help a Cancer patient? And here I was thinking that those guys who wore the t-shirts saying "Save the Ta-Tas" in honor of Breast Cancer were stupid.

The people take pledges based on how many days they go without shaving, competitions on who's got the best one, etc. It's not about the mustache they pay for anymore than a $3000 plate of sea weed at a 'save the dolphins' benefit is about the sea weed they paid for.

What right do the New York Yankees have to dictate to their players that they can't have beards?

BTW do you know about Remembrance Day in Britain and the significance of the poppy?

2nd BTW does this mean the gubmint can stop me from wacking off in public to support prostate cancer awareness?

The same way wearing pink makes people think it will do anything other then to make people think you are gay if you are male.

Most of the gay guys I know don't wear much pink. Not that that contradicts what you're saying, but still... most pink around here is worn by straight people AFAIK.
