So I found out after 1 year of college that I need student loans. I am claimed as a dependant by my parents, and will NEVER qualify for need-based financial aid b/c of how much my paremts make. So, where do I go to get loans in that ammount (over the next 4 years), and what do I need to know.

well since you don't qualify for need based financial aid....you definately need to take the max unsubsidized loans out. 2nd year: 3500, 3rd-4th: 5500. as for the rest, you will need one of your parents as a co-signer if you want to get approved for a loan through a bank. i got lucky and got approved for a loan through Nelliemae without a co-signer so you might want to check that out first.

I think Bank One does a lot of student loans too. I'm going to have to check them out in around a year for about the same amount of money. :(

Wow I was thinking about taking out like 15k in addition to my already ~8k or so loan. The numbers you guys are talking about makes me feel alot better about doing so :D

lol, looking at Bank One at the moment and came across this

Be sure to let your lender or servicer know immediately of any of the following:

Name (i.e. if your name changes to a married name) change
Address change
Gender/sex change
Phone number(s) change
Failure to enroll A) at least half time, or B) for the loan period certified, or C) at the school that certified my application
Withdrawal from school or begin attending less than half time
Transfer from one school to another
Graduation
Employer or employer address change; or
You have any other change in status that would affect your loan status (for example, the loss of eligibility for an unemployment deferment by obtaining a job)

now read the third one again

Why's your community college soo expensive? Ours was $11/unit.

it might be because I am paying out of state tuition (don't ask)

also, even in-state is ~60/credit

why not just start a website and ask the internet to pay for your schooling?

that seems to (for whatever reason) work for a lot of people who need money.

esp. if you're female.

generally what you should do is every year fill out a fafsa.

even if you get no aid, FILL IT OUT. from there you can apply for loans such as the stafford.

you won't be able to get more than what your school determines you need in a year. that's why you reapply each year you will be in school.

when i got my loans, i got 5500 stafford + 11000ish in PLUS loans (Parent Loans for Undergrad Students). If your parents can't or won't sign for that loan because it is taken out in their name, i don't know where else you can turn to.

You still will have to base it on how much your parents make but at least you can get to the loans you need through the government.

And you wonder why California is having budget troubles. Our community college are 1/10 the cost of most state's.

Go through Nellie Mae. Unlimited loan limit with a co-signer, 75k limit without. Out of state tuition really raped me, 26k/year at Georgia Tech. Nellie Mae also has a 20 year loan payback time.
