Kids these days have no sense of schedule or responsibility. My fiance's kid doesnt get his homework done or decides to wait until the last minute. Why? Because the school district allows the kids to turn in homework by the end of the trimester. So they slack off until the absolute last second to do it. 20 years ago if you miss an assignment it is an F. Today it is turn it in for full credit 3 months later. I am sure this one has been conditioned the same way. Wait until the last second then blow off other comitments because the world revolves around me.

No, I didn't. So she didn't make it to one class; big deal. Penalize her in some other way if you want. Failing a student for missing one class, for any reason, is just being a dick. People have lives, you know. Would you rather her lie to you and say she has explosive diarrhea?

Let me ask you this. The purpose of the class is so that the student can learn something by the time the class is over. By missing one day, has she ruined her chances of ever learning anything? No. So get over it; your class isn't the absolute most important thing in the world.

That essay might be time sensitive and must be done NOW. You don't know what other crap she may have had to go through recently and simply does not have time to do both the essay and your class in one day. Your class isn't her only responsibility in life. Sometimes, judgement calls like this have to be made when shit hits the fan. She's an adult; don't treat her like some little whipping bitch just because she has other responsibilities and chose to be honest with you, rather than to lie.

Where do you teach? Would they fire you if you missed one day? Did you get bullied in school or something?

I agree, shit happens but this situation was entirely a failure on her part to

A) get the essay done beforehand
B) not notifying us at least the day before so we can arrange a replacement student

Too many teachers suffer from "god complex" and their excuse will be that the students feel "entitled"

even more delicious that it's a doctor. I call shens. OP too pussy to fail an outstanding student for missing one day. Imagine the political firepower she'll bring.

I am sure it would have been fine if there is an emergency or she has arranged it before hands by switching shift with someone else.

Think of it this way. Do you get paid if you don't show up for your shift?

Yes. Its called PTO. Or a sick day.
