her excuse: I have to do an essay for an outstanding student award i'm receiving today

well, guess who's going to fail her in clinical rotations. lol

wtf students these days, can't they think of better excuses?

What are the repercussions of failing clinical rotations? Just wondering if the punishment fits the crime.

Hmm, if it's for an award she is receiving, wouldn't she have already done the essay? That's odd.

"Hey, you're a great student and you get an award! Now do an essay to make sure you deserve the award we already told you were getting."

ahahahaha, if the course requirement is to show up to your rotation and you don't, guess what, you don't pass.

I understand what you're saying and I knew someone was going to mention it, teachers can use their discretion, which obviously he chose to fail the student, I guess she's done things like this before.

I am sure it would have been fine if there is an emergency or she has arranged it before hands by switching shift with someone else.

Think of it this way. Do you get paid if you don't show up for your shift?

So you're going to fail her for not showing up for one class? Ah, I see, you're one of those dick professors.

You seem to have ignore the part about arranging replacement before hand or it being so sort of emergency...

Yeah - I mean they obviously decided that morning that she was getting the award that day but only after she wrote an essay in the enxt couple of hours. There would be no possible way she would have advanced knowledge of such an event and could, gee, I dont know, plan ahead or give advanced notice or anything

Actually yes but I compeltely agree with your point 😛

No, I didn't. So she didn't make it to one class; big deal. Penalize her in some other way if you want. Failing a student for missing one class, for any reason, is just being a dick. People have lives, you know. Would you rather her lie to you and say she has explosive diarrhea?

Let me ask you this. The purpose of the class is so that the student can learn something by the time the class is over. By missing one day, has she ruined her chances of ever learning anything? No. So get over it; your class isn't the absolute most important thing in the world.

That essay might be time sensitive and must be done NOW. You don't know what other crap she may have had to go through recently and simply does not have time to do both the essay and your class in one day. Your class isn't her only responsibility in life. Sometimes, judgement calls like this have to be made when shit hits the fan. She's an adult; don't treat her like some little whipping bitch just because she has other responsibilities and chose to be honest with you, rather than to lie.

Where do you teach? Would they fire you if you missed one day? Did you get bullied in school or something?

lulz, treating here like an adult is exactly what is happening here...

and where did I say I teach?

well relax guys, i'm not going to fail her. I was just a bit pissed she would call in 30 minutes before her scheduled time with a lame excuse like that. She most definitely knew about the award beforehand and chose to procrastinate about doing the damn speech. Irresponsible, no common sense, and poor time management...

I don't know what the clinical coordinator will do once she hears about it though, she's not as nice as me

She procrastinated on a task in which she was receiving an award for being a good student and then chose to skip class to complete the task. Fail.
