Student fights for his free speech rights against school's efforts to silence him

Yeah, this may belong in P&N and it is about a conservative student going against leftist teachers and students but it makes for an interesting read on what your actual rights as a student are and how to handle yourself in the face of screaming adversaries.

My name is Bryan Henderson and I am an 18 year old senior attending Princeton Senior High School. Better known as Templar_Crusader on the PW forum, I am the proud leader of the small but growing PHS chapter of ProtestWarrior.

Operation Tiger Claw was my first attempt at leading a protest against the apathy and leftism running rampant at my school. It all started on Friday, May 14th with a small act of conservative pride. My socialist history teacher was on another kick about how articulate Noam Chomsky was, when I finally reached my limit.

*looks at some of the signs posted throughout* Okay, is it just me or does he seem to have his left and right confused? Because the sings are very, very left.

Edit: Finished. He sounds like blowhard sh!t-disturber. I see a bright future for him in politics.

Edit 2: Ah... if it's parodies, then I really, really don't give a crap about him.

It's kinda lame. At least he could have come up with his own material. He needs to go to a website and print posters that others created to express "himself." Seems to me like his is just a mouthpiece, which I suppose is his right.
Then he goes crying to the ACLU when his rights are infringed. Also, if there are "liberal" posters or movie posters, he should be able to put up his, within reason, but I don't think he should be allowed to put 500 posters all over the place where others will have to clean them up. If every student puts up 500 posters, that will be almost a million posters, which will become a nuisance and or a fire hazard.

I don't get this setiment, and I hear it so often . . . Ideas are not unique, even ones outside of the mainstream. If you agree with them, what is wrong with spreading their ideas?

He's causing a disturbance in his school and posting flyers without administration approval, which when I was in high school, was against the rules.

School isn't a place for idealogues to spout their rhetoric - that goes for both this kid and his teacher. It's a plce to learn. He needs to vent his ideas in the proper forum, not in the hallways and classrooms of his high school. Form a club and meet during scheduled times if you wish, but don't shove your ideas about politics in others' faces, especially in school.

Where did I say there is something wrong with it? I just called him a mouthpiece, which is what someone spreading other people's ideas is. I personally think it's all just a nice trick to sell T-shirts on their website 🙂 Not that different form F911 or other similar publicity stunts. Why spend money on advertising when you can manipulate others to do it for you.

Lemme get this straight...guy mocks and dispises the ACLU but then runs to them and uses thier case law for help when his rights are infringed upon. hypocrisy indeed.

Speaking of F911, I hope some other students put up some posters of that film all over the school. See how he likes that. 😀

Haha. That was awesome.

As an university student who's had a sociology professor imported directly for Berkeley to forcefeed me the 'men are evil, capitalism is unjust, Chomsky is God' crap I can't say some element of personal satisfaction isn't coming into play. He probably should have kept from littering the walls of his schools with political messages but apparently it's legal where he is.

Too bad F911 is so full of outright lies that it's bullshit.

i'm sure he'll be fine and would counter the claims of that "documentary", he seems like a collected, levelheaded individual from the article.

Yup, it's just too bad more people couldn't take the same approach (whatever they may believe). He even says to stay cool and stick to the issues.

I do not agree with the posters, but it does give me some satisfaction to read this if for no other reason than to piss the liberals off (who lately have become extremely vicious, childlike, and annoying. Much like many conservatives I know 😛).

Let me guess, he is gonna go on the website and ask for a cliche filled poster to counter F911? 😀
Collected and levelheaded individuals don't look at their schools as "the enemy." I think there is too much self expression and not enough learning going on in schools. I frankly don't think schools are the place for political fights.

If you read it closely you'll see that he went to the ACLU to see if they would stick up for his rights to free speech in this case since they often go out to fight for the rights of liberal causes. He really didn't expect anything from them. He was basically checking the ACLU for hypocrisy.

Also, if there are "liberal" posters or movie posters, he should be able to put up his, within reason, but I don't think he should be allowed to put 500 posters all over the place where others will have to clean them up. But if you read everything that happened, not one person in the administration or elsewhere brought up the nuisance and/or fire hazard concerns. Teachers, students, and adminstrators either didn't like the conservative message and tore down the signs or resorted to name-calling and threats while he stayed calm and refuted them point-by-point.

Frankly, regardless of his political beliefs, I'm impressed with the kid for the intelligent way he handled himself.

Sounds about right. Just look at his whole "protest". What's he protesting against or for? Certainly nothing related to the signs. If it was the administration, he's picked an extremely poor way to do it. He never declared that he wanted anything changed, so he's not protesting in regards to that. As near as I can tell, he's making a nuscience of himself and posting those signs all over the place for no other reason than that he can. Yay, look at me! I'm anti-establishment, wheeeee! As I said, he's a little sh!t-disturber, and who knows how accurate his heroic depiction of himself really was. He seems the kind of person to troll in P&N.

Read the article again. He basically was sick of the leftist indoctrination that went on the school (specifically from a socialist, Noam Chomsky loving, history teacher) and the lack of anyone providing a conservative viewpoint.

If he didn't like what he perceived to be leftist indoctrination by the teacher, he should have discussed it with the teacher after class. This guy is nothing more than a troll trying to get a reaction. I still don't see the point of what he was trying to do aside from gaining acceptance from his online friends.

I think he is doing an awesome job to stand up for what he thinks. When I was in high school I also had a government teacher who was an extreme leftists whacko nutjob. She was a cool person, but she had no problem telling us why she was right and everybdoy else is wrong.

I think this kid is doing his fellow students a massive favor by having them think about the other side. In the end of it, the kids may not agree with the war or whatever but the point is the students should be exposed to all aspects of the government not just what the teacher feels they should know due to her own political bias.
