I currently have a Xp 2500+ running and 3200+ speed and one gig of ram.

I need to know why in the game I get great framerates then all asudden the game will freeze then pick back up.

thanks,
darkstar

Uhhh what video card do you have? MANY people actually have the same problem as you do, with even more powerful systems. I would first try CL_smooth 0 and see if that helps if you havn't tried that yet.

Especially given that your video card only has 128MB of RAM you most likely will have trouble getting absolutely smooth framerates at all times unless everything is turned down to low settings and you can forget about AA and AF at that res. SLI is about the only way to go for increased IQ and still have playable framerates.

Virus, spyware, fragmentation, malware, registry fragmented, failing components, insufficient power, heat problems...take your pick, and do some research!😀

What does that do? I've never seen that command before...

The problem is probably not because the video card is slow because he says the game runs good but suddenly stutters. This is probably due to the common stuttering bug in HL2 that hopefully a patch will fix.

I've never had that problem, and I'm running a 6600GT and 1GB memory.

There are lots of cards that can run 1920x1200 with acceptable frame rates ..

the 6800 np 128MB is not one of them.

VERY true. 1920x1200 is just TOO much for that card plan and simple. I don't even think I would try it with my 6800 GT...

CL_Smooth 0 makes it smoother for my self and others. I don't know if it still has the effect it had when the game first came out but I have been using it for quite sometime and its been much smoother feeling since.

That's odd. What does it smooth? Framerates? V-sync? I don't see how a software command would help make the game run smoother.

JBT your 6800GT will destroy HL2 @ 1920x1200.. Especially without ANY AA of AF.

The studdering is a problem with the game.... not your hardware.

more than one patch has tried to address it and it is better, but you can put on a FX55 with 2GB of ram and 2x 6800U and you will still get it.

Some servers are better than others in this regard (not a simple ping issue), but if you play very much you will be amoung a VERY few players if you do not experience this.

I played HL2 last week and completed with no issues or funny coloured water, i didnt have patchs as i didnt know there was any.

He's talking about HL2, not CS:S 😛 . Anyways, me thinks that your videocard could be having trouble with that high a res (don't have that monitor, or videocard, so I could be wrong), especially since it only has 128MB RAM. However, what I'd bet on is the game. Valve has CONTINUOUSLY tried to fix this issue, and have still not been able to alleviate it completely. If you can, just live with it, as there's really not much you can do.

I have made one observation, however. When running on my dual 6800GTs everything will be playing along nicely at 100+ fps at 1920x1200 2xAA 16xAF but at certain points the fps will drop significantly, much like what you are talking about. I have found that if I do a quick save and then reload from that save it brings the fps back up. Strange but true.

lol thats good cause I just ordered one of the 2405's a few hours ago lol... Now I just need to sell my 2001FP...

MisterChief Try it out your self. I don't really have any FPS issues or anything. It just seems to help the games stuttering a bit.

Awesome..

Let me know when you get it, curious to see how it goes for you..

BTW..

just was playing HL2 @1680x1050, 4x AA, 8x AF juuuuuuuuust fine..

😀

This happens in CS:S too sometimes, especially when there's a ton of people on the map. Valve will fix this eventually.
