Stuck trying to back up my .mp3 collection to DVDR

Hello all,

I've been searching passively for an answer to this for a very long time and I don't know if such a program even exists. What I'm trying to do is move some of my music collection offline (stuff I don't listen to much anymore) and I want to have the process a little bit automated as there's about 700GB to back up. Right now it's sitting on two hard drives in my system taking up space. Here are 3 problems I'm faced with:

- I want to preserve directory structures without spanning same albums onto several DVDRs
- I want to maximize space on target media
- I do not want to package into volumes with RAR or any other archiving utility (I will be keeping a catalog of all discs and don't want the added time of going through 140 DVDRs to extract a song)

I remember around 15 years ago there was a DOS program that allowed to do this with floppies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm suspecting something along the lines of creating multiple .ISOs with proper directory structures can be done with makeiso.exe

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Instead of spending all the time archiving the data to DVD why not just purchase an external HD and back it up onto there? Then just turn the drive off and put it in a safe place. It should be reasonably safe as long as it's not powered on.

I doubt it would be a more reliable way. If that 750GB drive dies I lose my collection and if it dies after the warranty period, the money I spent on it as well. If 10-20 DVDRs die I still have over 100 left. I have about 1500 DVDRs of various brands that I burned over the course of 6 years and so far my failure rate is very very low. All of my TYs G0x discs are 100% intact as are all Riteks. The only ones that failed are the early Princos and they comprise only a small fraction of all discs. I will be using TY media for backup.

Also, the cost will be quite different.

sh1t, even backing it up on two drives is worth it despite the price for the convenience.

I'd have to agree.
