stuck in safe mode

SOONER

Senior member
My computer is stuck in safe mode. I am using Win 98. I have tried holding ctrl key and selectin normal but this hasnt helped. What else can I try? Thanks.

[*]look in the device manager under EACH category (except system) for ghosted (duplicate) devices, and remove the top one.

start/run/msconfig

[*]uncheck the startup group, autoexec.bat, config.sys and apply.
[*]reboot when prompted

Pull all expansion cards except video.

* What was the last thing you did before this started happening?

I had been having random reboots so it had been having some hard shutdowns. I havent changed any hardware.

CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM - Device Manager

You want to go through each list of devices and eliminate duplicate entries of drivers under each category.

MadRat, that was already suggested in the 2nd post, and it didn't help SOONER's problem. 🙁

Actually the other guy suggested removing the top one, not all of them. But whatever.

What you may have is an ACPI issue; they are common when using multiple bus mastering devices. Disable it and try again.
