Stuck at Newark Airport

Okay, it's official: my trip is not going well.

I am trying to get to Burlington VT for my grandfather's 95th birthday party. I flew into Newark from MSP, and arrived at about 3, with a connecting flight set for 4:40. When I got to the gate, I found my flight was canceled. Grrrrrr . . . I had to wait about an hour in line at the Contintental customer service desk, where a nice woman set me up with a 4:30 flight to Boston, with a connection to Burlington - yay!

It was about 4:25 by the time she had my boarding passes printed, and my flight was in another terminal, but she said I'd make it because the Boston flight was running late. I had to run to the tram to the other terminal, where the security included a weird, Total Recall-esque machine that blasted me with air, supposedly to detect explosives (though it's possible the machine exists solely to make me look stupid for the entertainment of the TSA guys). After I'd made it through the air-blast gauntlet, I handed my boarding pass to the TSA agent, who (probably noting that I was just then arriving to board a flight that had nominally already left) told me I was selected for random security check. I protested because of my flight situation, to which the TSA guy responded, "You're supposed to be here two hours early for every flight!" Not really helpful advice under the circumstances.

I finally made it through the security (though they took all but one of my grenades!) only to arrive at the gate and find that my Boston flight is running two hours late, so no connection for me. At this point I'm hoping to get onto an 8:30 flight on standby, but it doesn't sound likely, so I will probably fly out tomorrow morning. My dad actually has an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, but he's out of the country and I don't have his keys. At this point I'm debating whether to get a hotel room or just have a few beers while watching the game, then crash out in a chair. Ah, the glamorous jet set lifestyle! I only wish they had a USO at Newark airport - I am an inactive reservist but I still have an ID card I could use to crash that party . . .

CLIFFS NOTES: Travel is a hassle, and Continental Airlines sucks.

Sorry to hear. Did she bother to see that it was so late it was going to keep you from connecting? Probably couldn't do the math.

Take NJTransit to Penn Station, take the A to the upper west side, enjoy his apartment in about 45 minutes :)

The thing is, I don't have the keys, and he's in Europe, so I can't reach him to have him call the doorman (who I don't really know) to have him let me in. There may be someone staying there too - they lend it out a lot.

I was supposed to fly from Seattle to Chicago, and from there to Newark a couple of weeks ago. Plane had problems, so after sitting on the runway a while they sent us back to the gate, tinkered with it, then shoved us out the door to go make other arrangements. The Alaska Airlines agent was able to get me on a direct flight from Seattle to Newark only a couple of hours later, which was nice. Sadly, my luggage still went to Chicago, along with that of several other people that got the same flight rearragement that I did. It wasn't delivered the next day, but at 3:30 A.M. the day after that.

It would have been nice to not have it get misdirected in the first place, but it did get back to me relatively quickly, even considering how far off the beaten path I was. That's the only time I have ever had luggage get lost with Alaska Airlines.

No other major hassles, unless you count the screaming babies on the planes.

UPDATE:

I made it on my standby flight. Luggage is lost, but that was expected. I am posting this on the WiFi in my room at the Doubletree in Burlington, sipping on a Rock Art Ridge Runner barleywine (not bad, but not really a full-bodied barleywine IMO). Man am I tired . . .

The glories of commercial air travel. When it's bad it can be really bad.

Continental sucks and Newark sucks. Put them together and you have quite possible the ultimate airline suckage. The only thing that could possibly be worse would be the combination of Continental and Logan airport.

Thanks, man. It is indeed the one with Trader Duke's (my grandma's favorite restaurant, by far). Too bad I'm flying out at 6:40 Sunday - no brunch for me!

I was going to suggest hopping on "The Vermonter" Amtrak train. Looks like you made it though.
