Stubborn USB failures

Hey all,

For months I had the "power surge on USB hub" error under Windows 7. With or without the error message, I would get intermittent USB device failures. I tried the following:

- Unplugging and reconnecting affected device(s)
- Connecting majority of my devices to powered USB hub
- Upgrading to Windows 10
- Replaced motherboard
- Swapped out USB devices
- Replaced PC case and all USB cables/connectors to case

None of these resolved the USB failures, although the error message is gone. Often requires a reboot to restore temporary functionality.

Does an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 fully replace the USB subsystem? I know there are some issues with USB 3 under 7, although all devices are USB 2. The only thing I can think of that remains is the CPU, which is several years old.

How is the power in your house, and/or your PSU? Is your PC plugged into a battery back-up UPS with line conditioning/AVR (automatic voltage regulation)?

If you have replaced the other components, that could be your issue. A defective CPU can cause odd issues as well, but out of all the components that could be the problem, it will rarely be a CPU.

It looks like you have covered your bases pretty good. In my experience it is almost never the CPU, however you seem to have tried nearly everything else. One way to eliminate software as a cause it to run a bootable CD version of a small Linux distro like Puppy or FatDog64. If you have issues on both Windows and Linux you most likely have a hardware problem. http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/iso/

I suspect one of your USB devices. What USB devices are you using? Did a new PS come with the new case? I would have thought maybe the motherboard but you already changed it...

Thanks for the replies. I have tried removing each USB device from the chain and that didn't resolve it. The power supply is on the older side, Corsair AX850. More than enough for my system I should think: a single GPU is the only card on the Z77 board, plus single SSD and a 3-drive SATA raid array using the onboard Intel controller. The USB hub has it's own power supply. I live in a newer apartment with modern power, however, I have had the monitor or printer fail to power up on occasion, resolved by resetting the power strip. I have 5 devices on a single power strip, so I'll try replacing the strip and also stripping down to necesary devices only on that outlet.

Edit: I don't have battery backup or line conditioner.

In all your efforts I do not see that you replaced the hub.Maybe I missed that step.

Does this only happen on the hub? If not, sounds like a power supply issue or grounding peoblem.
