I can't say I care. He wasn't from my home state but he should have retired many years ago.

I don't hate him. I actually didn't really care about him before and I don't care about him now. I just don't like it when people think that they are on such a high moral ground that they can talk down to others who feel differently than them. Some people don't like him for the man you say he used to be. The fact is, no one here knew him as a person then or even now and to say that he has changed his ways considerably doesn't mean anything. A man so against the black people in this country suddenly decides to do a 180 as more and more become voters is a little sketchy, but that idea doesn't hold much more water than yours because neither of us really knew him, we only know his actions. You feel he deserves the benefit of the doubt while others do not. I don't think either is right or wrong, but if they wish to celebrate his death, they have that right as much as you have the right to mourn it.

You're no better than they are, you just have a different view on the subject. People have these alternating views all the time.

Wow, thanks for making that completely idiotic post. Had it been slightly less ignorant I'd feel inclined to actually argue against it. But you're saving me time by showing that you're completely hopeless and I shall not waste any more time with you.

Good day.

Again with the "I'm better than you are" attitude. How long ago were you a racist?

I was funny to listen to him talk, he was hard to understand! 🙂

He did change this ways and IMO redeemed himself. I'm not a Republican by any means but it's someone who died. RIP Strom.

If the man really did die, atleast have to decency to spell his name right.

if you going to bitch me out about it at least make sure you dont have any mistakes..
if i going to bitch you out it's because you make mistakes too..

I'm sure you'd like to have an error on your tombstone.

Nothing was sweeter than to turn on my pc this morning and see the headline he had died. He was a disgrace. The only sad thing is he didn't die sooner.

He holds the record for the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history at 24 hours and 18 minutes, in opposition to the 1957 Civil Rights Act. He began his filibuster by reading the texts of the election laws of all 48 states.

:Q 😀

What's wrong with Thurmond?
he was pro segregation during the 50's and 60's..also during the civil war the world is a better place now that he is gone.
Uh..that was 40 years ago. During the 80's he became very supportive of civil rights, and in fact was the first southern democrat to hire a black person to work for him I think (and no it wasn't slavery 🙂)
the way i see it, there is no way to ever redeem yourself after treating another human less than equal to yourself based on race.

Thats the foundation that this country was built on and the way people were raised, racist. Atleast he was man enough to recognize the immorality and support civil rights later, and he didn't die the bastard that he once was. In that respect, he set a good example.

On the other hand, some other senators and former senators deserve to still carry the bastard label.

Obviously you never ever reviewed his voting record.

Can you honestly believe that a person can change from racist and pro-segregation to open minded just because civil rights got passed ... at his 50s? He was a racist to the bone and it would not be possible for him to change. The country is better off without him.

RIP Strom I-hate-n!ggers Thurmond...

Those of you who try to hold people in the past to the same social standards we have today are morons. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. It wasn't an unusual thing to do back then, and most people wouldn't think of you as a horrible person if you did. Do we look at him as a bad person today? No, we don't, because he still did more for this country than any of us ever could.

The same applies for Strom Thurmond. A proud southerner in the 40s-60s did not want to government telling their states what to do, and didn't want blacks to intergrate. The fact is he wasn't stubborn enough to support segregation throughout his entire life. He changed. He served as a U.S. senator for 48 years, and anyone celebrating the death of someone who served our country for so long doesn't deserve to live here.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of your own parents and grandparents were racist at some point in their life.

I think it's funny how people on this board jump up and down with delight and glee when a politician they don't like dies. It shows how classless most of you are. What's even funnier is half of you probably don't know anything about him, except what you happened to hear in the media.

I can't stand your hero Bill Clinton but if he died I sure wouldn't act as crass and ugly as you lot.

Well actually I would be as happy, if not more, if slickwilly drops dead.

Seriously guys, you might not like Strom, but he was a human, at least have respect for human life. He had relatives who cared about them, can't you empathize with what they are going through. Maybe it's just the lack of sleep making me see things, but some of you are being real dicks.

You make me sick.

Ya no crap. I realize you thrive off of being controversial and living on the edge with what you post Ameesh, but the man is dead. And no one, no matter how different there opinion is from yours, deserves death.

Your a very cold-hearted person Ameesh, and I feel bad for your children (or if you dont have any, I hope you dont.)

I definitely would have to say that i am not a fan of his politics. but, the guy ran for president against harry freaking truman in 1948. there is just something a little unsettling about a man being in politics who ran for president before my father was born in 1952. but still..its never nice to see somebody died. george wallace? maybe him...but not strom.

Yep. Supposedly, the Senate doctor threatened to drag him off the floor if he didn't stop.😛 Strom was tenacious, there's no denying that.
