String Theory

Yeah I think it was a few years ago. I read the book... musta been 4 years back I think.

The show was on channel 13 a few years ago. This guy also has a few books to. It seems to me that they prove the whole thing with mathematics so complicated that only about 50 people in the world can understand it. Why should we believe it? 11 dimensions my ass.

There are A LOT more than 50 people in the world that can follow the math.

Welcome to 5 years ago. Still unproven BTW. FTW, FWIW, IIRC, BBQ, EMC2, yadda yadda 😉
Being unproven doesn't make it any less likely.

You could say the same about any religion or philosophy though couldn't you? 😉

uhhh. no..

Why not?

Tell me what we do know about the world, and what's left to be discovered?
There are lots of things there were hypothesised (eg: genes) but were left unproven for a LONG time.
We still only believe we know what's inside the Earth, we haven't really proved it yet, the evidence we partly have is from guesswork.
My point was that we don't know much, and some of what we do know lay unproven, or is still unproven.

Sure you can. There is no way that you can prove string theory right now and there is no way that those who are working on it can prove it to you either. They work in mathematics that are meaningless to all but a few extreme geniuses working in theoretical physics. At this point to me it is just like a religion. There are "prophets" who "know the truth" that no one else can know, and they tell us that we should believe it. To me right now it's bs. If they can come back and prove it to me in 5 or 10 years then I'll listen.

u stand too much on the subjective plane...

He has a point, and IMO a very valid one. Although the comparison with religion is whack.
There are lots of theories which have been shown to be wrong or slightly misguided in the past.
There is a lot of contention even now with many theories.
There are also many things which have taken many years to PROVE (like some of Einsteins other stuff), and while they were correct (and often accepted) there was no conclusiveness which could be shown.

Waiting for proof may take more than 5~10 years, it may not come in our lifetimes, or the theory may be misinformed, as in the past some ideas have been.

have we ever proved a religion to be true out of the 100000 religions and beliefs in our past and the present? nope... will we ever? probably not..

have we ever proved a theory to be true or confirmed out of 1000000 theories in the past?.. yes.. dozen and more of them... will we ever confirm the validity of this theory?.. probably..

I think it can be compared to scientology for example. One person or a small group of people tell us "here is how things work". We have no way of knowing or checking weather they are right or not, should we listen to them? Most religions share that similar element, for example in Judiasim where Moses came down from the mountain with the 10 commandments from God. The people below had no way of checking weather they were from God or not.

I have the book, The Elegant Universe, by Brian Greene. It's copyrighted in 1999.
...and the sequel, The Fabric of the Cosmos, copyrighted 2004.

I have read them both through a few times and it is very very interesting. I love how simple it is and it seems the equations back it up, but then again, I am no quantum physicist.

let's not make it more complicated than it is....
religions are based on ideas, beliefs, stories, documents, and etc.
theories are based on facts. period.

Yes, but as I have been saying in this case of string theory there is know way to check those facts so it comes down to whether or not you choose to believe the "string theory" people or not. Why should we believe them?

No current way to check the facts you mean?
Will we ever be able to check facts of faith? Likely no.
Will we ever be able to check the facts of string theory? Based on history, likely yes.

How are you going to prove string theory?

Just because it makes mathematical sense doesn't make it reality. I can model an impossible shape using mathematics. I can model an unreal world and heck even render it in realtime on your PC, but it's not real. It follows mathematics, in fact it is ENTIRELY based on mathematics. Which at this point is no different than string theory. But it is NOT REAL.
