Strike the Plasma Idea - I'm liking Sony LCD's

UPDATE:
ok, well, i went to CC and BB... To be honest, i really preferred the brightness of the Sony LCD's... Both the 46" 720p Sony LCD and the beautiful 40" 1080p Sony LCD were really amazing... Seeing them side by side with the Plasmas was a world of difference, i literally said WOW out loud....

Hmmmmmm

OLD:
As i await the last DLP lamp i will ever get to arrive, i've been looking around at a new plasma to replace it.

I considered an LCD as well, but the black levels on anything but the sony's seem to be lacking compared to Plasmas, and black levels were one thing that bothered me about the DLP in my room as well, it never gets dark enough during the day to really give you good blacks.

Swung by the trio today, CC, BB and Sound Advice and decided the Panny's seemed like a good balance between price and quality, one of the sharpest ones of the bunch. Granted the Pioneer Elites were nice, as was the 65" Panasonic 1080p Plasma, but obviously, I can only afford a TV, not a car...

Now, coming from a 46" screen, would the 42" be a big step down in size? Or should i just suck it up and let Amex pick up the extra inches and go for the 50"? (its at least a $500 price diff between the two)

aphex,

I've somewhat of a plasma fan, and being a videophile I can appreciate the desire for deeper black levels.

However, why would black levels be a concern for you in the daytime? Usually the only time you notice the (relatively) poor black levels on RPTVs and LCDs is at nighttime with the lights dim-- even in dark scenese, the sets seem to "glow" black.

It's true with a plasma you get deeper blacks-- really deep blacks. However, it is at a cost of overall brightness-- at least when compared to LCDs. For most, this shouldn't be an issue. But if your room has a lot of ambient light and/or direct sunlight, you might need to invest in some window coverings or go with another technology...

With regards to size, unless your sofa is 6 or 7 feet away from where the set is going, I would go with the 50" if at all possible-- otherwise you might find yourself having to upgrade a little sooner than need be.

I am using my Sanyo PLVZ4 projector on a 96" hi def screen and its great...I have about 30 ft from projector wall to screen

Size of Room/Viewing Area

Make sure you have adequate viewing space between you and the TV. With Plasma TVs becoming more and more popular ?and cheaper?these days, the temptation to purchase the largest screen possible is hard to pass up. However, you must have the proper distance to have the most pleasing viewing experience.

Rough recommendations are as follows: 32-37" screens may be viewed from 6 to 10 feet. A 42" plasma display may be optimally viewed from 10-14 feet. A 50" plasma display will look best from 12-16 feet, and you should have at least 15 feet to work with when installing a 61-inch or 63-inch plasma screen.

and since amazon has the panny 42", i can snag it for $1220 shipped, not half bad at all! Makes it a $700 difference between the 42 and the 50, thats alot.

By the THX standards: 10' = 42". 😉

I own myself the TH42PX60U and I am a very happy customer! As a matter of fact, I wall mounted my TV yesterday! It's amazing! 🙂

take some pics!!

Yeah, I'm not super happy with the black levels on my new 50" Samsung DLP. I'm second guessing whether or not I should have gone with the Panasonic 50" plasma instead.

just curious, what Panasonic are you looking at?

Panasonic TH-50PX60U 50" or the TH-50PX600U 50" Plasma HDTV

TH-50PX60U

I have 42" Samsung plasma (forgot model #). I think I'm ~6 ft from the panel (small apartment). For me, the size is perfect, if not too big. I hear great things about that Panasonic you are looking out (I actually went out to buy the 42" Panasonic; but BB had sold out so they let me have the Samsung for the same price: $999.00) ... 🙂

I'm curious where you got those recommendations from, because those distances are much farther than I have seen. The normal recommendations I've heard are a viewing distance of 1.5 to 3 times the diagonal size.
For a 42", that means 5.25 ft to 10.5 ft.
For a 50", that means 6.25 ft to 12.5 ft.

I have a 50" LCD RP and our normal viewing distance is almost exactly 10ft. I certainly wouldn't want anything smaller and if money wasn't an issue, I probably would have gone up to a 55 or 60.

It's up to you if you want to spend the money, or can afford to. But I'd go with the 50 instead of the 42, especially if you are used to a 46.

my friend gave me a good idea...

Buy the 42" now, and when its time to upgrade in 2 years, move the 42 into the bedroom and get the 65 for the livingroom 🙂
