I just learned about this today, and for those that don't know, apparently there's a new (I don't really know how new it is, but I've never heard of it) wheel & tire fad. Apparently people are intentionally buying wide wheels and narrow tires so that the bead is pulled outward from the center line of the wheel when installed.

Here's an extreme example:

What the hell are people thinking?

I saw one of these this morning... ~2000 civic hatch with tires way too small for wheels that were way too wide for the car.

Mexicans have been doing this for decades.

yes. welcome to 1984.

its stupid as all hell, and kind of funny to watch them when they fail. i had a neighbor back in 1991 that had a lowered nissan truck with stretched tires. bead broke one morning and it took him 3 hours to figure out how to get a jack under his truck to change that tire. i drank beers and watched the whole time. he finally got real tires for those stupidly wide rims tho. they stuck out the sides more than 5 inches.

The front isn't horrible, the back is though. Stretched tires on 15" wire wheels on a bagged Crown Vic is pretty pimp.

These are the same people who think that having 15 degrees of camber is a great idea. That's really all you need to know about their expertise.

I have always assumed that was a function of people buying aftermarket wider rims, but being too cheap to buy new tires. In any case it looks stupid and must lead to truly goofy handling.

stretched tires have some purposes in certain motorsports.

however, most of the above should stick to their 'warranties' and minivans.

lolz.

Its all about the stance, yo!

Poke them tires!

Seriously though, as a jetta owner, i frequent the jetta forums to get technical info once in awhile and can't stand the posts by the imbeciles there. Every other post is "Lower that shit, dawg", or "Camber is king", or "Poke is hella ballz, yo". I mean, do people really speak like this? Don't they know what they are doing to their cars?

Most don't. They only see an image and want to one-up anyone else, no matter the cost in handling, ride, or anything else. Who could possibly care if the look is at the expense of durability of the suspension?

Those rears are illegal in a lot of states. Out past the body.

any proof to back that up, never heard of such law. Cali and Texas guys are doing the hella flush thing to the extreme.

I'm asking because i'm a little more then flush but no tire stretching or camber. Didn't know such laws existed. If there is a law, IL would of picked up those laws instantly.

I find this type of thing as a source of hope. Natural selection can still be occurring in the human population, sucks that these same groups of people are the breed-happy type as well.
