Yeah. Mild turbo tho not like 14PSI or anything.
Still up in the air on that one. Probably not. Gotta save for other high budget items. The LED lights, fog lights, etc are only $1-200, not a big deal. $4k turbo, bigger deal, plus I'd have to rebuild the engine first if I don't want to blow it.

no I definitely would like to engage in low-key for-fun street racing (no I don't want to be playing at a track, too professional and structured, unexciting); but it looks like I can't have that for anywhere near what one would call "safe". I couldn't justify all the work of turboing if I'm only going to be able to hope to find someone else that wants to race.

I'll post pics when I'm done with the lighting 🙂 I am excite.

Who knows, maybe the lights at night will attract enough attention to make a turbo worth it 🙂

On a side note, some kid was killed near my house a few years ago street racing. He lost control of his ricer and hit a tree at high speed. He died at the scene. His family still goes and puts flowers near that tree and the tree still bears the scars from the accident.

OP - Like others have suggested I'd stay away from the streetracing, especially with the kind of crowds you have in your area. See if your local track does a "Street Car" night. Ours did and it was a blast. Drivers could come race for $25 and spectators were only $5. You could line up with your buddy and make about 5-8 passes depending on how many people show up. Not as structured as regular dragracing and it is legal. Might help you scratch your itch.

You can have them installed, but the bottle must be closed and not within reach of the driver. You also cannot have an electrically operated valve. (to prevent people from installing switches to actuate it)

So basically:
Yes, you can have it on your car.
No, you cannot use it on the street.

Check the tracks for RSD nights? That's popular around here, it's clocks off racing with all the bullshit talking of 'street racing', but doing it in a legal manner.

I guarantee you this, the first time you run through the lights at a drag strip you'll realize how bad you are at it. I had a friend talking about how his Eclipse spyder would beat my truck all day long. He went to the strip, pulled 1.2 second R/Ts and ETs that were almost two seconds off what I did. It didn't surprise me though, I had slow R/Ts and in subsequent trips cut my ETs by about a half second without modifying the truck at all. If I didn't have the time slips, I wouldn't have known how bad I was or how much I had improved.

Street car night bracket racing is far from formal. You get in a line, run what you brung against the guy in the other lane. That's all there is to it. You can usually arrange to have some else lined up against you. Just talk to the other guy and the person directing traffic.

Just bring some white shoe polish and paper towels 🙂

The RSD events are pretty much street racing at a track. You can pick who you want to run and the generally the races are started by a flagger, although you can request to use the tree, and determined by a track appointed spotter at the far end. You still get time slips, but they're split so you only get your half. There's never any times shown to anyone but the person running the car.

As far as I know, just nitrous because of it's nature. Water/alcohol injection are okay, especially given that Saab did it themselves. Turbos and superchargers are okay. The only other thing I could think of along the same lines would be propane but that's just diesels that use it.

The "street racing" area near Detroit is a special place. You have one high profile incident a few years back where someone lost control and killed someone in the crowd. If that wasnt bad enough, four suburban cops had shown up to cheer on the racers, they were even playing music through the PA systems in their squad cars.

Back around this time there was a local teen who was practically famous for being a terrible driver, and fancied himself as a street racer. Managed to get 18 points on his license in one weekend, and his insurance was almost $5000 for six months. His stepdad (who had himself done jail time for killing his passenger in a drag racing accident) was a total enabler and happily paid all his fines and insurance. The only time this kid was really punished in any meaningful way was when he got sentenced to do community service and had to wake up early on saturdays man that infuriated him.

best part is this kid couldnt really drive. I know he wrecked at least 4 transmissions, and blew up an engine because he didnt know how to properly operate a manual trans. Despite this, his stepdad had a gorgeous bright orange GTO restored and this kid took it up to the races one night (after having blown up the transmission and engine in seperate incidents and several thousand in additional repairs). He told me the car got T-boned by someone who ran a red light and was never caught, but I think its more likely he just lost control and totalled it himself. $30,000+ down the drain but he didnt learn his lesson.
