IGNORE THE FACT THAT THEY WERE RACING FOR ONE MOMENT.

Now, what is your reaction to someone doing 55mph in a 37mph. Atleast in Illinois, that is far from reckless driving charges. Reckless driving starts at 31mph over the limit. So what would you say if someone did cut them off and cause an accident? Again, ignore the racing aspect and take those facts as the basis of your judgement.

Now factor in that they were racing and that it was a woman killed. How does this change the situation? I do not think it should change the situation at all. Why should it? And take into account that because they were previously were racing, that affected the media's take on the story, and I'm sure it had a decent impact on the initial article in the original post. How much of your initial reaction is swayed by the writer's perspective? Can you really know?

EDIT - what I'm trying to get at is, what is the difference between a "racer" and someone who is speeding?

I won't take a side until I see pictures or diagrams of the crash. Where the woman was pulling out, etc. I mean, for all you know, the racers could have been telling the truth and that the woman pulled out in front of them. Just because they were going over the speed limit doesn't necessarily mean that the woman isn't responsible for the crash.

Once I get out of my neighborhood and get onto a busy street a block from my house, I see people going 60 in the 35 zone. So I don't bloody try to turn left in front of them. And assuming the racers were slowing down and where pretty much right next to each other, why would I turn left in front of THREE cars?

UPDATE:

Here is the google map of the street where the accident took place.

Link

There are concrete medians on the road separating E/W traffic with openings for cars to turn N/S on the side streets.

The woman should have had plenty of room to see these cars coming. I don't know what lane she got hit in either.

It's possible the camaro lost the race and was further behind the two other cars. When she turned left, she just made it past the two mustangs in the first 2 lanes and then as soon as she got in front of the third lane *bang* there's the camaro.

Ditto with drunk drivers. I like to think of it as "preventative measures."

ahh one of those MADD/SADD people...

so much income for a really little problem...the limits they have are ridiculous when you consider most people out from thursday night => sunday after 10pm are legally drunk, but they are not killing people.

I still don't feel comments are in error if it was that ladies fault, even if it wasn't he has his right to his opinion.

Great you already have the rest of their lives planned out, what have you done for society?

Whoa. I would never have imagined there would be someone NOT against drunk driving. And where do you live where most (in actuality, you mean "many" since you could not possibly know the statistics to define a majority... common English mistake) people are legally drunk after 10pm? Little problem? Considering alcohol is involved in ~40% of all traffic-related deaths in the US, I'd say you're a "little" off (source: NHTSA).

Back on topic, his friend definitely has a right to his opinion. What I meant was that, for his friend's sake, he should have kept quiet and his buddy's lawyer figure out a solution. But I'm glad he was too dumb to do that.

What have I done for society? Hahaha. Nothing, yet. But seeing as how I'm about his age and haven't killed anyone, I'd say I'm doing slightly better.
