Streaming Video Slows Computer Down

Whenever I play streaming videos on the internet or just in WMP, my whole computer slows down and the program it's in uses all my CPU up. I have to go into task manager and kill the process for my computer to go back to normal. This is not affected by streaming audio, and it does seem to slow my computer down a different way with quicktime.

I've tried the following options:
Reinstalling WMP10
Reinstalling WM 9 Codecs
Reinstalling Video Card Drivers

Nothing seems to work. I have a feeling it has to do with one of my codecs but i cannot find out which. Thanks for the help guys.

PC Specs:

Athlon XP 2.1ghz
1 gb ram
Nvidia geforce 6600 gt
onboard epox 8rda+ sound

i assumed that the format was wmp only, what other players are there and how do i make them the default in a web page?

also does this only happen with .wmv or with all types of movies. Maybe you can see if it still happens in winamp or quicktime.

You could try reinstalling directX.
Is your video acceleration turned down?
Do you have FFDShow installed and doing some heavy filtering?
How do the videos play in other players?
Any particular videos this happens with?

You could try reinstalling directX. didn't do
Is your video acceleration turned down? i dont think so
Do you have FFDShow installed and doing some heavy filtering? never heard of FFDShow
How do the videos play in other players? i cant really test, because it always plays in WMP when its embedded in a web page
Any particular videos this happens with? i think it's all
