Streaming Mp3 server

What program do I need to setup a streaming mp3 server on FreeeBSD 5.0?

I did a quick search and only found
Icecast 1.3.7 source
Shout 0.8.0 source

Icecasts doesn't support Mp3 format (licensing issues?)

Is Shout the only way to go?

Any other alternatives?

Are you sure Icecast doesnt support streaming MP3? A group of friends of mine, including me, used Icecast for a streaming MP3 station for several months. And Icecast was designed for MP3 Streaming..

BTW, You'll also need an encoder if you choose to use either server..

I used to run an mp3 streaming server a year ago on a FreeBSD 4.4 box, I can't for the life of me remember which program I ended up with (it wasn't either of the aforementioned programs). Do a search on Freshmeat or Sourceforge, there's tons of mp3 streaming servers out there...
 
hmm, im looking into the apache mod. seems to be for linux but thats not a real problem.

My bad! I meant Kplaylist ... here

It does not resample the stream though. But I only use it on my LAN, not across the web. Though I have found that 128kbps streams pretty well.

I setup netjuke http://netjuke.sourceforge.net/ on my freebsd box about a week ago because I was told it would do playbacks through the server even though its meant primarily as a streaming box. It looks absolutely awesome for streaming but to have the server do playback....it sucked. I'd try it out though since its what you're wanting to do.

I want to have a remotely controlable jukebox but haven't found a good one yet. Sometime to change, maybe create songs, move back and forth in playlists, pause playback, etc through a web interface would be great.

I didn't really think that took alot of processing power. I don't know wether this is related or not, but when transferring several large files over the net from my Debian box to my windows boxes sometimes I do notice a little slowdown. I'm thinking that you're system would probably be a little faster than my puny 700mhz though 🙁.

Write one! Once I get a new machine finished I'm gonna turn it into a file/mp3 machine and just hook the speakers up to it. Not exactly streaming, but remotely controllable 🙂
 
As far as that naughty link, I think there is some domain registration mangling going on. One of the sites I list (yes, it is still listed), refers to itself as being another URL/domain name. If you actually type in that advertised URL, you might get a little more than you've bargained for. Even Google reports the naughty site as the first hit (assuming you get the search term correct).

Heh thats all I'm wanting myself man. I've got samba setup as a file server, will be setting it up as a print server soon, and just wanted to plays the mp3s that will be stored on it throgh the stereo 🙂 I'll let you write it though, just let me know when its finished please 😉
