So, I just upgraded my computer. It was a big upgrade (from a Athlon2-630 to a FX-8350). One thing I noticed about the way I tend to game is that I usually (not always) am running a video capture or video streaming software. I notice that, typically WoW is running parked to 4 cores. I hit the capture button, and the other 4 cores light up. The 8350 is fast enough to only drop 4-5fps when recording full-frame video using x264, and this is on a relatively CPU-hungry game. Just for the sake of comparison, my old setup couldn't keep the framerate above 25 when raiding, and capture was out of the question (Pandaria raiding is pretty tough on CPU's. Moreso than the last expansion, where it was possible to pull this off on my old computer, but only with MJpeg and only when sacrificing 15-20fps). So, I'm happy with my choice, but I sure would have liked to see some comparison numbers on this kind of thing before I made my purchase.
Now, I'm pretty sure that if game streaming was a major part of your hobby and you had cash to burn, the 12-thread Ivy-E's are probably the kings (especially considering all that memory bandwidth). But I wonder if this is an area where having more execution units makes a difference - where the FX-8350 and 4770k have a definite advantage over the 4670k. Normally, people suggest the 4670k as the best bang/buck for gaming and to use the last $100 on purchasing a better video card. Perhaps this is a scenario where it's worth it to have 8 threads, even for games that don't scale past 4.
Anyway - has anyone ever benched this? Like, gaming at 1600p, and then recording or streaming x264? Seeing how many FPS you lose when capturing at 4k? Where it would make sense to opt for the processor with more cores/threads and when the i5 does just fine?
