Stray cat problem

Linux23

Lifer
i'm trying to figure out a way to contain the cat/kitten explosion happening around my neighborhood right now.

i know if i trap them and try to give them to animal control they'll laugh in my face and turn me away. or ask me to pay them a fee to take the cat, like when i found a stray dog last year wandering the streets. 😛

can't really commit a kitty 187 so then I ask you me fellow home owners, what are my options?

i don't really hate cats, but i don't like them either. i'm sick of washing my car and then the next morning i see paw prints all over my hood. pisses me the hell off.

Other than no kill cat shelters or, SPCA which does kill animals that can't be adopted, there aren't many choices. It depends on which you value more, cats or, lack of paw prints.

Check to see if there are local shelters that do spaying / neutering in your area for strays. There's an organization in Chicago called "Paws" that offers cheap / free spaying and neutering.

http://www.pawschicago.org

When we were there getting our stray spayed, there were people there with cages who trapped feral cats out in the alleys or wherever they may be, brought them there to be spayed and neutered, then released them back to the wild. This at least helps to reduce the population growth as they can no longer procreate.

Good luck!

yup, we found a feral cat service in town that traps, neuters, and releases them.

The upside is that the fixed cats keep the unfixed cats out and can't produce any more cats.

Trap; take it in for a spay/neutering/de-clawing (front and back) and then release it. Birds will thank you by never pooping on your car again.

1. Open Door to your house
2. Keep it open
3. Have cats walk in
4. Become cat dude
5. Profit. 🙂

Just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Animal Control of Jersey City. In a nutshell, i'm SOL. I can't trap them. Can't shoot them. Can't poison them. They won't come in and trap them. I can't bring a trapped cat to them.

WTF am I paying taxes for then?

trap spay/neuter and release or you can trap and release in another part of town.

yeah i'm going to trap them, and throw them off of the bridge that is 1/4 a mile away from my house.

well at least that's the mental image that keeps playing in my head right about now. 😛

Find a vacant house. Bring all cats to vacant house. Lock in house with enough food for a day or two. Call police that you noticed a vacant house with cats inside. This will make the news and you will receive help from everyone.

Or, lower a cat down a well. The news, fire departments and others will all come to help rescue the cute kitty.

The above appears to only way to get help for cats.

Oh and did you try calling Liberty Humane Society right there in Liberty State Park? My current cat who is 7 years old was found on the streets of JC at like 2 months old. Adopted him a couple months after. See what they have to say.

cats are so cute. They will do a good job at eating vermin also. I have a stray black kitty that sleeps on my front porch.

Yep. They directed me to animal control, which told me to go sit and spin.

Let them all in your house. They'll no longer be strays. Stray cat problem solved. I should be president...

i'm calling this place now http://libertyhumane.org/programs_services.php

last time i checked they wanted like $80 bucks to take a stray dog off my hands. maybe their cat policy is a bit better 😛
I'll take the cats off your hands for $40 each (you pay me, not I pay you). 🙂

Also, regarding those spay/neuter programs. It's nearly pointless (correct me if I'm wrong) to waste money on neutering, unless it makes the males less likely to spray their urine to mark their territory. One male cat can service dozens of females. I.e., on my farm, I only need 1 male goat for 50 female goats. My brother raises beef cattle. He only has one bull, which takes care of a few dozen females. A program that neuters male cats fails as soon as it misses just one male; and there are plenty of homeowners who let their male cats outside who will gladly take care of those females in heat. I'm guessing that people think, "hey, there are 24 females and 24 males; 23 of those males are neutered, therefore only 1 female cat can get pregnant. Reality is, all 24 of those female cats are going to have kittens that all have the same father. Thus, a waste of money for the expense of neutering.

Also, mail the female cats to Red Squirrel - they're better mousers than male cats.

i had over 20 stray cats eating the food i put out for my old cat.
one day a neighbor lady came around and said she was trapping them and taking them to a low cost spay/neuter place, asked if I would contribute some $, i gave her $40 bucks i had in my pocket, best $40 bucks i ever spent. she eventually got them all, a few were so sick they had to be put down, but now we only have a handful of cats, no new kittens every few weeks. and no cat fights every night.

Sexist. :colbert:

It's also a lot easier to neuter a male than to spay a female. Just saying. 😀

Get some of them fixed. It changes their demeanor and might help drive out the rest of the cats. Cats in the neighborhood are great if they are fixed.

I have a mom cat with a litter out under my shed in my backyard. Hasn't become a problem yet and I leave them food every once in a while. Might capture her and get her fixed but I'm going to wait until she's done work on her kittens.

If you can't give them away to people who want them, they will end up being killed. I've faced this myself. Did everything I could to rescue and save stray kittens, and no one wanted them all and we couldn't keep them, so eventually some had to be given to the shelter that just killed them. Sad, but its a reality.

So people like you can waste their time asking them to do their jobs.

First interaction with a government agency? 😉
