Dawn of War is the best. Empire Earth 2 kind of sucked, I think mostly cause it was just too much micromanagement and the graphics looked circa 2000. Rome: Total War did not interest me, I played it for a couple hours and said "nah, not for me"

EE2 sucked in my opinion-graphics and gameplay were crappy.

aoe2 is still pretty good... aoe3 will be very heavy on graphics requirements I heard.

Assuming you already have SC and WC3, I would suggest Rise of Nations. It is a great game, whether you like the RTS or could go for some Turn Based as well. Personally, I did not like the Dawn of War Resource System, but you might want to check out the demo to see if you like it, if you are going to buy it.

I play Starcraft from when it was released until last fall, albeit less and less as time went on. Anyways, as far as strategy, it cannot compare to the Dawn of War. DoW is the most fun I've had in the last year, including Half Life 2. Obviously what some people love, others will hate, try out the DoW demo, and while the Single Player campaign is entertaining, it's a bit too short and easy. Online is where it's at.

if you've got a PS2 sitting around, check out Disgaea. it's a turn-based strategy game along the lines of the Shining Force games that were out for the sega genesis.

AOW: DA is extremely fun, but single player campaign takes a long time to get the good stuff.

It's like a graphically enhanced C&C game with a realistic-ish plot.

EDIT: Didn't realize that AOW:DA needed strategic spacing ;)

Of course... the REAL strategy games is Civ III... and you can get that with the 2 expansions for $40. :)

But... you have to like turn-based.

Empire Earth 2 is phenomenal. The game is just so deep and the graphics are really pretty good. It is a RTS which actually requires lots of strategy to win. Also the multiplayer is great.

How does Empire Earth 2 compare to Empire Earth 1? I loved EE, but I haven't gotten a chance to give EE2 a shot.

This one is new, Supreme Ruler 2010.

Link

I cannot say that I have tried it yet. But it is something to consider.

If you want very deep (turn-based) and *strategy based* gameplay: Civ III is the only way. :p

For a similar experience in real-time try Rise of Nations.

Otherwise, if you just wanna build bases and beat the snot out of folks... Warcraft III: TFT still owns all :)

(That is, of course, unless you're one of them obsessive C&C people... then go get Generals or Red Alert 2)

That's my 2 pennies...

Now you just need a poll titled "What kind of strategy gamer am I" for the verdict :p

EDIT: Oh... and IGN shows a Q4 2k5 release date for Civilization IV
