In a previous post I said I just built a A64 939 system with an abit AV8 motherboard and my floppy drive wasnt reading any disks, so I swapped it out with a floppy drive from my moms computer and everything worked fine and it read disks, so I went down to Frys today and exchanged the floppy drive that wasnt reading disks for a new one of the same make and model, and I came home and installed it, it wont read any disks. So I put my moms floppy drive back in and it reads disks fine, any idea whats going on here?

LOL Don't get the same make and model! I hope Fry's will let you exchange for a different floppy company. I wonder if, for some reason, the cable or jumper is off for that particular make and model. Try looking at the floppy drive and make sure the jumper connectors (if they even have any anymore, its been so long since I bothered to look, LOL) are on the same settings between yours and your moms. Sorry about the grammar, me tired.

I think the floppy cables only goes in one way, but sometimes the floppy drive/cable can be so cheap that it fits both ways, but only works one way.

Yeah, if you put in backwards the floppy light would stay on and nothing would happen. Just for giggles check the back of the working floppy and the one that isn't working and make sure they have matching jumper. Like hardrives, maybe somehow the floppy company set a certain switch wrong. Also make sure the bios is set when the new floppy is installed. Maybe it is reading it wrong. I am grasping at straws here so excuse me if these possibilities are stupid sounding.

Are you using the same floppy disk to test with? Possibly one of the drives is out of alignment. Try using a blank floppy, and formatting it (full format, not quick format) in windows, and then check how many bad sectors it has (run "CHKDSK /F" on it), and then take that floppy to your mom's machine, and see if it can read it. I'm really surprised to hear about two floppy drives failing in a row, but it's possible, if they are some cheap off-brand, or refurbs.

Only reason I can think of this happeing is a incorrectly installed floppy cable. I know for a fact the motherboard side of the connection is slotted but the FD side prolly isn't. Try it both ways. Also is the bios detecting the FD ?? Getting any lights?? Does it make any sound when you click it from Windows?

Have you tried the floppy drive that won't work in yours in your moms computer? If it doesn't work there either, I would get a different brand..
