strangest boot problem ever

Ok, so my computer was working fine just a few hours ago... but now when I try to boot it, I hear the case fans starting up and I can feel the HD humming... but my screen is blank (as if no signal) and even if i type in the password to get into windows after waiting for a very long time, it doesn't have the windows sound (so i know it isn't the vid card's problem) trouble is... my keyboard's caps lock etc. keys don't light up after a very long time, long after windows should have started. I've narrowed the problem down to two potential candidates: mobo and cpu, can anyone tell me what can possibly go wrong?

Just for reference, I have a gigabyte ds-3 and a core2 duo e6300

I seems like your computer did not get pass POST. Are you overclocking? If so, you make want to decrease your speed. I have this problem when the FSB is too high. You have to clear your CMOS in order to get it to boot. Also, you might want to put a small fan on the northbridge chipset. The northbridge on this motherboard is notorious for overheating because the heat sink is too small.

I agree, clear the CMOS and see if it POSTs.

I think it does POST - read the OP again. It could be a number of things - temperature, bad drivers, motherboard, or cpu. Just from reading the OP I can't seem to narrow it down any further.

OP - what happens when you try safe mode? Can you make a bootable Linux disc and see if that works? If safemode/linux are fast/responsive, then we know that it is a software issue, not hardware.

The first thing to do (provided you can get into the BIOS) is to eliminate any overclocking & see if you still have the same problem... if it recurs with all components running at default speeds then its time to look into drivers, extra cooling etc.
