Stranger knocking at door at night. What would you do?

I just picked up my new pistol yesterday after waiting the 10 days. It'll be for home defense and personal defense while out in the mountains.

This reminded me off an incident a few months back. I live with my brother but I was home alone that night. I was in the computer room upstairs when I heard a knock at the door around 9-10p. I wasn't expecting any guests but I went down to check. I looked through the peep hole but don't see anyone. I then peeked out the the side window and there's a male in his late teens standing at the corner of the walk way about 15ft away. Looking out the door the walkway makes a left to the driveway, which is blocked from view by the garage. Guy is facing away from the door but obviously talking to someone out of view behind the garage.

They weren't directly outside the door so I couldn't shout out what they wanted but I didn't open the door either since I had no security door. I checked through the window on the other side of the garage to see if anyone triggered the motion sensored light. Not seeing anything I went and checked the door again but they were still there. The guy never once looked back towards the door so now I'm about ready to call the cops to report the suspicious activity.

I walked over to the coffee table to get my phone and when I returned to the window they were gone. I decided not to call but continued looking out the window. I finally see them across the street knocking on the neighbor's door and going to the next house when no one answered. So it looks like it was just some dumb kids from the neighborhood trying to sell something.

I would never open my door past 9PM unless it is for people I know. I am not in college so I don't have people randomly dropping by.

Get my dog to bark.

This. I have 2 loud ass dogs.

Apparently I live in a neighborhood where the homeowners association thinks it's ok to sell our information to soliciters  Fucking idiots. Eitherway, unless I know someone I try not to answer, but if I ever do answer my doggie is right next to me... barking his ass off starring at them.

If I saw somebody hanging out on my driveway talking to somebody in the bushes. The cops would definately be called.

I would carry my pistol in holster and answer the door, only opening the inside door, leaving screen door locked.

This thread hits home, in a way. About 6 months ago someone knocked at my door at around 2 am. I went to the door, looked through the side windows and didn't see anyone. I figured it was a prank, or maybe I had dreamt it.

I went back to bed, only to hear more knocking a few minutes later, this time in a more insistent manner. I jumped out of bed, turned the porch lights on, and loudly said "Hello?" without opening the door. This time I went around the house without turning lights on and looked through different windows, but I still didn't see anyone or anything. Let me tell you - my heart was going a thousand beats a minute by that time.

It really scared the shit out of me. If the knocking had happened a third time I think I would have called the cops, but it didn't. To this day I assume it was a prank.

9-10 at night is too late to be selling door-to-door. It's completely dark by then here.
What hemisphere are you in?

I grab a pistol. I listen carefully and look out a few windows to look at my driveway and my front porch. Chances are, I don't open the door. If I do, I'm stepping back as I open it, or off to the side.

Simple. I call the cops, wait for them to show up, give them a vague description of the guy knocking and then let them shoot him about 10 times.
