I really don't see the big deal, I wouldn't feel threatened at a gas station. If they end up asking you for money all you do is say no. People are so unsociable now a days...

when i said i afraid that he might ask me to give him money is..... what i mean is force give money term.

if stranger ask for some spare change then im not threated at all. in fact theres several time when aproached by bums and i give them spare change.

and if i dont have any changes i would never say "no" that is just plain rude even to bums, they are human too. i would politely say "oh sorry i dont happen to have any spare change"

ive been in situations where my car broke down in a shopping center. walk up asking this man in his 50s with a 12 year old son... he jus kept on walking to his car and ignore me... avoiding eye contact but his son starring at me and trying to tell his father im asking something. he just straight up took off after got in the car without even looking at me. probly thinks im beggar or something. but really i was jus trying to ask to get a cable jump and i even said it but guess he was busy ignoring. after asking several strangers and finally this one young gentlemen in his late 20s understand my situation. when i walk up and ask... he just say sure no problem.

old people dont understand. always jump to conclusion.

another situation back when mobile phone wasnt popular..... car broke down. go around asking stranger to break my dollar for 4 quaters for a phone booth. 1 person said "sorry no change" and another said "i dont have money" what the ffff is these people thinking? and finally a women says "oh you want to change that dollar?" she probly saw me holding my dollar in my hand so she look up quaters in her car and change with me. finally! she probly think im asking for money and all the the other people i have asked. thinks im a beggar.

see? people likely to jump to conclusion.

i know how it feel to be ignored when you ask for a legit help from strangers...... so dont you dare thinks im unsociable! oh no you dont! oh no you didnt! uh uh cause i know how it feel to be ignored!

It has nothing to do with feeling threatened and more to do with them almost certainly not having anything to say that's worth stopping to listen to. All you really have in life that means anything is time. You don't want to spend one second more of it than you have to saying no to low-lifes loitering around convenience stores.
