strange xp switch user problem

When my computer has been running for a day or two all of a sudden the switch user option goes flaky. When I select log off> switch user the dialog box disappears and acts like I hit cancel, it does nothing. It will log off normally and shut down.

A reboot will fix the problem for another day or 2 sometimes even longer. It has gone as long as a week without doing this.

Anybody have any ideas?

Edit/ I forgot to mention something. When I bring it back from sleep or screen saver the login screen doesn't appear. The only thing that appears is the desktop wallpaper no icons or start bar. I have to cntrl-alt-del to bring up task mgr then the start bar appears along with desktop icons.
 
wierd, I've never seen anything like that.

you could try changing the "way users login" settings (and than changing them back) that might make a differance
