Strange Windows XP SP2 problem?

I'm experiencing either a strange Windows XP SP2 bug, or my Altec Lansing speakers are begining to fail.

Ever since I installed SP2, it has been very difficult to control the volume of my speakers. I have the speakers turned down to their lowest level, and I have the volume sliders in Windows down to nearly their minimum level, but my speakers are still extremely loud. My sound card is a Creative SB Live Value.

Normally I would think that the hardware volume control in my speakers is beginning to fail, but it seems oddly coincidental that this started happening at roughly the same time I installed SP2. Also, the speakers seem to have more background noise than they used to, kind of like they are receiving a lot of signal from the source.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Perhaps some of your mixer settings got altered?

See if you can enable ALL of the lines on your mixer (not just the few that they want you to see). You should be able to mute your CD, Microphone, and any Aux inputs. Also, adjust your WAVE and Master volume appropriately while you're at it.

See if that helps at all.

My master volume and wav volume are almost completely turned down. I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with my speakers.
