when I do a search in my win2K rig now I get thousands of results, containing vaguely the term I search for, i'll give an example:

when I search for "star trek DS9 1x02 - past prologue.avi"

I get this kind of results.

which is about the result i'd get if I would have combined the searches for:
*star*, *trek*, *DS9*, *1x02*, *-*, etc.

so something is totally out of whack, I tested on my XP system (laptop) and that one does not have this behaviour.

WinXP and W2K's default search feature are different. But the manner in which W2K's search is operating is normal. It treats search terms seperated by whitespace as seperate search terms, and by default also treats individual search terms as if they were bracketed by asterix.
Surround your search "phrase" with double-quotes if you want it to match exactly, instead of be parsed as multiple independent search terms.
