Strange Win2K problem

I decided I should switch from win98se to win2k pro at work. So I got a new hd and installed win2k. No problems there. Problem comes after I've got the whole thing setup. I have the network configured the same as every other win2k install I've done at work. Anyway, if I access the net, about a minute later the connection dies. The computer still is "connected" to the LAN, but I can't see anything, intranet or internet. The mouse also stutters when its moved. Also, the connection status shows 0 bits transmitted and/or received, which obviously isn't the case. Reboot, same thing.

This took place Monday and Tuesday. Today I fired up win2k but went off to do other othings. Came back two hours later and used the net for about 5-10 minutes before the network connection died.

I'm starting to think this might be a hardware problem since I've triple-checked the configuration. I'm probably going to reinstall windows and get a different network card.

Also, I should add that the same IP/DNS/Gateway/etc. config works fine in windows98se on the same machine, which is what I'm using now to post this. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Take a look in Task Manager and see if any processes are running wild. WHat is your system configuration.

Nope, task manager shows everything going great. 99% system idle process. Here's the configuration:

HP Vectra
P2 333
384 meg ram
dual Matrox Millenium 2's
SMC 9442BDT NIC
generic ISA soundcard
60 gig DiamondmaxPlus
cd-rom
zip 100
floppy

I'm reinstalling win2k right now so we'll see what happens.

One thing about ISA sound or NICs is that they almost always default to IRQ 5. You may have a conflict in the bios. Several ways to fix this. Bios config: set PNP OS to yes and/or disable legacy for the sound card. Win2K has alot of different driver conflicts for leacy card, especially sound cards.

If you are running a P2 333 then your mother board bios/chipset may not be supported. ACPI is intregal in 2000, and older bioses don't support it. You may need to have your tech dept. flash it.

Wish you luck with this.
