Question Strange WiFi issue

Hi everyone, i looked and didn’t see this topic. If I missed it and another exists, please delete this thread.

So, we have a Shaw (cable) RF gateway in our house. Puts out a good 2.4GHz signal around the house. All of the devices that connect have great throughput.

Very recently, my daughter's PC has started with the dread "connected, no internet" issue. I've seen this before in my past. I verified other devices on the network, and zeroed in on her PC. I rebooted it, I went through the ipcofig /release, the netsrc.sh commands and all of those useful tips you find. I made her PC forget and reinitialilze the connection. I even deleted the WiFi modem driver and had Windows reinstall it. No progress.

Frustrated, I tried another route. I turned on the wireless hotspot issue on my phone and connected my daughter's PC to it. Lo and behold, it worked great.

So I have a network source (the gateway) that works with every other device. And I have a device that works on every other network but the main one in our house. I thought maybe the radio link between the two might be weak and I purchased a booster and configured it and moved it to the hallway outside her door. That did not help.

I am very open to any and all suggestions of what to try next. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

What type of wireless adapter is in your daughter's computer? Is it 2.4GHz only, or is it 2.4/5GHz? And, are you sure your hotspot was putting out a 2.4GHz signal? It is possible for a dual frequency adapter to loose one radio while continuing to work on the other.

Also, have you checked the IP addresses on all the devices to ensure that her desktop isn't getting a duplicate IP? I very vaguely recall a past issue with Win10 where that was a problem on some networks.

Finally, have you tried to remove any security software present on her desktop to ensure it isn't blocking the connection?

If you've recently upgraded the version of Win10 to 2004 (2020-04 edition), then that might be the reason. Some of my PCs show "no internet" or the "globe signal" rather than the "antenna bars", even though they ARE connected, and the internet is working on those PCs (wirelessly, they aren't wired up).

I place the blame squarely on Win10 2004, if that's what you have installed. That upgrade hasn't been super-smooth for a lot of people, lots of "little issues".
