Strange Vista behavior

I'm not sure what happened, so I'll describe it best I can. Go to the computer, the screen is completely black (because that's the desktop background color), no windows showing, no taskbar, icons, nothing. I can hit ctrl-alt-del, it takes me to the normal screen of options, and I bring up task manager. Now with task manager open, the taskbar is visible and functional, but still no desktop icons. All programs are also functional, I can open them up from the start menu.

All the processes that normally are just hidden in the background, are now along the taskbar, as if they were open applications. They all also appear in task manager's application list. I went through them all one by one and clicked on end task, and once they were all shut down, the full desktop appeared once again, and the computer is working normally once again.

Anyone seen this before and know the exact cause? My only access to the computer is through remote connection, else it's an hour & a half drive away. In other words, my abilities to work with the computer are very limited, and am hoping that someone has seen this specific behavior before?

Thanks.
