This is the second GF2 MX400 that dies on my hands. The first one died because of bad overclocking (my bad). But this one had a rather peculiar decease method...

Since its summer and i live in a hot country like Greece, its natural for my comp's temps to rise a lot. But even with an open case i had temps like 55C on my cpu even on idle mode and 37C for my mobo (for a month now). I gave little attention however because my system was working fine with no problems. Until... one night when i was playing jedi knight2, the game froze and threw me back to the WinXP desktop. It surprised me because it was the first time after 6 months that i had any problems (since my last Geforce's death). The same thing happened again 3 or 4 times, after half or one hour of play. Same happened with C&C Renegade. I plugged off the computer and took out the video card. I tried to move its fan... and the thing wouldnt budge!!!!! It even took a little strength to be able to move the fan without breaking it! I took it out, replaced it with an identical one, installed the card again, turned on the system. The CPU temps were really reduced, dropping to 52C. I started jedi knight agan, playing for a longer time than before this time, the game froze again... tried all my other games too, same thing happened. I guess the damage was already done. So i took out the card and replaced it with an ANCIENT S3 4MB (that works perfectly btw since 1998). My temps right now as we speak are 51C for my CPU and 33C for my mobo (i guess the little cleaning i did with the vacuum cleaner in my comp helped a bit too). Now i am with no 3D accelerator, though my comp works perfectly. Now im waiting to buy a new card (possibly the Radeon 9700).

My question is, what the heck made the fan of my Geforce card to get stuck like that??? (i also noticed some burn marks in its center). It also seems that its a miracle that the card was working for a month in that way (cause in that month i still had higher than usual CPU and mobo temps, meaning that the Geforce fan wasnt working, thus heating the card and eventually the rest of my system. What should i be careful about, the next time i purchase a new 3D card so that this doesnt happen to me again??? Any comments or suggestions are more than welcomed.

It's really strange. The GF2MX series are cool-running chips. Personally, I had an MX400 for about 6 months w/o any active cooling (ABIT Siluro MX400), with only a heatsink. I think there can be 2 main reasons: 1 overclocking; 2 inadequate cooling. It sounds like the cooler for your MX400 wasn't glued on properly. These things happen, you know. And, of course, the hot ambient temperature did contribute a lot.

I didn't think the GeForce2mx needed a lot of cooling. I have an orignal Visiontek GeForce2mx that has no fan and no heatsink. It just has a naked chip, and I haven't had any problems with it even with overclocking occasionally. I really don't know what to say about your situation.

Thanks for your replies. But i do see a difference between you two and me: Both your cards are well known brands. My cards were no-name taiwanese brands (meaning much less hardware quality). Maybe thats it... low quality hardware that couldnt last in time...
