Hi, I hope someone here can shed some light on whats going on with this problem. I just finished a rebuild on my daughter PC, the reason I did this is because I added an IDE controller card and a new 40GB WD ATA100 7200RPM drive to her PC, and it was time to reinstall Window98se.
System
PS - Antex 300Watt Smart Power
Motherboard - JETWAY 993AN, VIA Apollo Pro AGPset - (downloaded and installed the latest 4 in 1 drivers)
CPU - Intel Pen III 600 100 bus
RAM - 128MB PC100
Controller Card - Promise Technology Ultra100 TX2 PCI (used the drivers that came with it)
Hard drive - WD 40GB ATA100 7200 (BOOTABLE Master, channel 1) (Home of a NEW clean install of Windows98SE)
Hard drive - Quantum Fireball 12GB ATA66 5400 (Slave, channel 1)
Hard drive - Quantum Fireball 6GB ATA66 5400 (Master, channel 2)
DVD Drive - AOpen 16X (Master on MB Secondary IDE Connector) (Drivers from Windows98se)
CD-ROM - Asus 54X (Slave on MB Secondary IDE Connector) (Drivers from Windows98se)
Video Card - Asus AGP7100 MX GeForce2 MX 32MB - (downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Asus)
Nik Card - D-Link DFE-530 TX+ Fast Ethernet (used the drivers that came with it)
Sound Card - Creative, Sound Blaster Live Value (This is where I had problems, Now using the 3.0 Live Ware Drivers only)
Almost to the problem, please stay with me.
Did a slow, clean install of the items above. I installed the Windows with only the - video card, Contoller Card, WD 40GB hard drive, DVD drive. (and at this point I installed the new VIA 4 in 1 drivers, and the Controller Card drivers) After that I changed the Jumpers as needed, and added each drive (Newly partitioned and formated) one at a time. then started adding the other cards and installing the drivers, again one at a time.
OK here it comes (the problem)
All was going well until I got to the last card, I installed the Creative Sound Blaster Live Value card, started the PC, to install the New Live Ware 5.1 drivers and Software, and this is where all the problems started. Followed the directions first, during the install it looked OK everything went well until the reboot. After rebooting the sound card worked fine (but the DVD drive was gone from Windows Explorer, Gone no where within the Explorer, The slave drive was there and it had its drive letter, even stranger is that in the Device Manager - it was there, and had no problems.
At this point I uninstalled the software and drivers and the Sound Blaster Live Value devices (using the direction I got from Creatives Web Site to uninstall and reinstall) and tryed to install the card again, and again, and again trying different methods, with the same outcome. (Also Tryed just Installing the 5.1 Drivers only. where I went into file hell, Windows would not except the drivers on the 5.1 CD.
What worked, was finding an old 3.0 Live Ware CD and use it for the drivers, and that only works with the install new hardware wizard, If I do this my DVD drive stays in Explorer and works, However if I was to install the software off of eather the 3.0 or the 5.1 CD the DVD drive is gone, I even tested this by removing the Asus CD-ROM drive (this drive would remain after each try) to see if it just could not handle the number of drives, well when I tryed this the DVD still disapeared, I had no CD-ROM or DVD drive then. So the only thing that is working now to have both a working sound card and a DVD drive, is to use just the drivers from the 3.0, because if I try to use the rest of the software it kills my DVD drive.
The strange thing is that before this everything worked fine, the only items new to this is the Controller Card, and the WD 40GB drive, and the new drivers on some of the other devices.
Anyone had this problem, any suggestions.
Thanks
Jim
