Strange temperature readings

I have a Duron 650@900 on a Soltek SL-75KAV board.
I've just placed the thermistor-on-a-string (c) under the heatsink, right next to the core.

What surprices me is that the thermistor next to the core reads 42C, while the one in the socket reads 44C (full load).

I know that none of the temperatures are very indicative of the actual core temperature, but I would assume that the thermistor next to the core would be the most accurate one, or am I completely wrong here ?
