No idea what this stuff is. It will build up in toilets around the water line and the shower where water may sit. It is easy to remove by scrubbing without cleaners but does take some elbow grease to do so.

But it's the color - a pinkish/red that is puzzling. Could it be bacteria?

I'm thinking about having the water company come out and test my water. We've got pretty good water here and my tap water measures 240 ppm total disolved solids (TDS).

thanks for any guesses/answers.

5 years old. I think all the plumbing is PVC.

I would think mineral stains would be harder to remove?

It's a pretty bright pink, not the rustish red I think iron would leave. don't know though.

Well, it's not your piping that's the problem then. The description still seems like excess iron. Do your neighbors have the same issue?

Good point, I'll have to ask them the next time I see them.

Meanwhile I'm probably going to have the water company come out and run a full set of tests.

Yeah, my brother had this in his old apartment. He said it's hard water, you need a water softener.

sounds like the water mains in your area have rust....no way to fix it without the city changing the main.

Might need a water softner. Might also need to flush your water heater and let all the mineral build up in there clear up. Mineral/Sediment build up in your water heater can cause other problems.
