Strange question: What chemical to eye doctors use to dilate eyes?

The drug is called a mydriatic which means to dilate the pupils. A few drugs of choice in ophthalmic procedures and examinations is topical (opthalmic) Phenylephrine HCl (e.g. neosynephrine), Cyclopentolate, and Tropicamide drops (its been a few years since I've had any opthalmic experience, but I think that's correct).

Atropine is an excellent mydriatic - too good. It is only used for therapuetic reasons because its action persists from 7 to 10 days.
