I've never been to Rome, but very much enjoyed Amsterdam. I went to the Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank house, as well as the Heineken Factory which was tons of fun. The best Irish pub I went to in Europe was there as well, although I no longer remember the name of it or where it is. Somewhere near the Anne Frank house there is a great place that serves what I would describe as the love child of a pancake and an omelet. It was absolutely fantastic. Also, I believe french fries are a big thing there and you can find places that specialize in them. Overall, there is plenty to do for a couple days even if you don't do drugs.

The funny thing about Amsterdam is that even with the red light district it's still (outside the red light district) one the cleanest large cities I've ever been to>

I thought I heard on the radio they were starting to close down many parts of the Red Light District to clean up the city more.

Been to both. As others mentioned both have their pros and cons. I would definitely go with Rome though. The historical sites alone make it worth it, to say nothing of the cultural sites. It's a messy dirty city too though. Amsterdam is fun but unless you are really going to get into the drugs, sex, etc then the other sites to see there just don't compare to Rome (not that there isn't interesting cultural and historical stuff in Amsterdam, there is, but it won't bowl you over like Rome will).

Yeah, dog crap is a problem in almost all Euro cities.

But when I was living in Paris they had motorcycle squads that went around vacuuming up the poop and washing the sidewalks. The vacuums and water tanks were built onto the motorcycles, the driver never got off the bike.

The streets in Paris were actually cleaned every single day. All city blocks are constructed in a tilted angle. Late night/early morning crews come around and turn on water which flows completley around the curb. All debris has been swept there and is washed down into the sewer system.

Fern

yeah, i took plenty of photos in several cities all over of little old ladies walking up a 30 degree grade in high hells, with their little fox fur shawl, walking a yappy shit poodle, letting it shit everywhere, and walking on.

:D

Rome to me was sort of a checklist city. There is a lot to see but I doubt if most people really enjoy seeing it. Being cattle-herded into the Sistine Chapel isn't my idea of a fond memory. Not that I didn't enjoy my time there.

Amsterdam was more livable. Comfort foods abounded (vlamse fries!) and great beer was cheap and plentiful. Beautiful Dutch girls rolled along big, convenient bicycle lanes. Everyone is a foot taller than you. Its sort of like living in a fairy tale.

Then again I was stoned constantly in Amsterdam, and had a particular interest in the museums there.

I think it just depends what you want to see. Most people, if they weren't going to get high, would probably be better off going to Rome.

ROMA!!!!
Amsterdam is a shithole. Putrid stagnant -water sulphur-stink canals, ugly girls, zillions of visitors from all over looking for pot & pussy, ugliness abounds in every dimension.

I really dislike Amsterdam. The PEOPLE are wonderful, but the big city-ness is same as friggin BIG CITIES EVERYWHERE-worst of humanity.

Roma! Actually, if you start in your early 20's you will die an old man before you exhaust its treasures. HOWEVER, in Italia you'll have a MUCH better time getting the hell outta the big city to the north, as far north as you can manage. That's where it's happeneing.

If you are taking girls, better not go to Italy, where guys will casually reach out from the sidewalk as you pass by and grab their boobs, etc. Is COMMON in the CITY of ROME because everybody knows the looking-for-adventure-tourist-girls are easy lays (no matter WHAT you do, EVERYBODY will know at a glance that you are foreign. Absolutely no matter how clever you are you can NOT disguise that).

ITALY (GO FAR FAR FAR NORTH) NOT AMSTERDAM (SEWER OF EU)

(I'm in both places on business at least a few times every year, for many years running.)

Maybe you should have left the red light district, moron.

By your style of self-expression, what a FRIENDLY bozo you are!

I don't suffer buffoons like YOU, but this time only...

I'm in Amsterdam (because of it's major airport hub) and I'm in Rome (ditto reason) a few times a year, every year for many years running. I KNOW whereof I spoke. And on the basis of my personal EXTENSIVE experience I said a visitor would likely enjoy a happier and more camera-friendly and more exploration-exciting time in Rome and go NORTHERN Italy (to the Alps) than in prostitute / pot stinky-putrid-canal Amsterdam. Yeah so thge big deal is to toke it in Holland. Big Wow! WHo the fuck needs that bullshit?

I KNOW firsthand what I said is correct.

No, you lying sack of shit, you said that Amsterdam is the "sewer of the EU." This contradicts my experience, as well as all the other posters here with experience in Amsterdam. Prostitutes and pot are confined to a couple of square blocks in Amsterdam. The rest of the city, WHICH I HAVE FUCKING VISITED, is just about the cleanest of the many large cities I've visited.

Honestly, you speak as if you've never actually been.

Please accept my invitation into a whole new way of being...MATURITY

Ah you are rescued at LAST!!! (Obviously way overdue)

What you DO is ALSO an EXAMPLE for others...if you toss off that sort of immature hostility, you are creating an example for others...

("every time the observer shows up it has something to do with you every time it's something BAD...")

I'm pretty sure that you're lying about visiting Amsterdam so often. This is probably why you've changed the subject to my supposed immaturity. This is rich, coming from the dude who just called Amsterdam, a place repeatedly ranked among the best, most well run, and livable cities in the world, a "shithole."

Your online persona is poorly presented affect and transparent pretense, you obvious poseur, you.

In certain areas, yes. The area around the main train station is dirty and sleazy. The further away you get from that area, the better. I enjoyed Rome quite a bit because I love the historical sites, but I think I might have enjoyed Florence even more.

Florence has the initial appearance of being less dirty, but since it is surrounded by mountains the smog cant escape. The entire city smells like exhaust fumes. My wife and I were in florence for a week, and only ended up spending one of those days in the city. The other 5 days we went out to the countryside and toured vineyards and did some horseback riding.

Rome has lots of good food (assuming you don't fall for the tourist traps), and lots of good history, but it is definitely dirty and crowded. It's a shame when you go to a beautiful ruin and you see graffiti all over it.

Venice is pretty cool, but incredibly crowded. My wife and I had fun just wondering the canals.

Generally, to Americans, I think most European cities probably seem "dirtier" than many American cities. They're generally older and the passage of time causes buildings to be caked with grime over the centuries. And, as a few mentioned, dog poop can be a problem in places like Paris. FWIW, I found Milan to be dirtier than Rome.

Florence, to us, seemed more "magical" than Rome. It is obviously smaller and but we really found it appealing and having the charm of the some of the smaller towns in Italy I visited a few years ago. We only had the chance to spend a couple of days there but we intend on going back and seeing the other sites. We did go to the Uffizi (talk about an inefficient admittance process!) and the Academia where the statue of David is held.

Venice was actually a destination for us, but we decided to spend the extra day or two in Florence. I honestly have no desire to see Venice but my wife wants to go badly, so that means, we'll be going. :D

And for those who are saying Rome is big, that's true but keep in mind it is tiny compared to a city like Paris and most of the major sites (forum, Vatican, Pantheon, fountains, various churches, etc) are within only 3 or 4 miles of one another IIRC. The sites are far more spread out in a city like Paris or New York.

Florence is by far my favorite. Depending on the time of year, it can be nasty or absolutely pleasant. Summer is bad of course--crowded, hot as hell, smellier. I could probably spend 5 solid years there still not having seen all there is to see. I feel like Rome was done in a weekend.
:\

Milano is the nastiest shithole city that I've seen. Gah, I hate that place. The only thing to really see there is The Last Supper--if you can actually see it. GL with that.

Venice is awesome. Probably one of my favorite places. Lots of really good museums, but just wandering the city, getting lost intentionally is more than half the fun.

I'd suggest going in the fall-late fall. most of the tourists are gone, it's not too cold, and not nearly as smelly. The flooding starts around then, too...but that's actually kind of cool.

Rome. Since you've already experienced Amsterdam, why not try somewhere new? Rome,is beautiful. There's soooooooooo much to do there. The sites are great, the atmosphere is wonderful, the pizza is mind shatteringly good. Pizza in the U.S is like dog crap compared to true Italian pizza. Do whatever you want though,it's your decision.
