strange question: do they make this kind of sdram ?

i have a mobo where one of the ram slots only registers half the ram. I tried a single-sided dimm & got error beeps, so I assume the side that the chips are on is broken. The chips are on the right side when facing the top of the dimm, with the smallest "partition?" pointing down.
do they make single-sided dimms with chips on only the other side ?

Whether or not the chip physically has chips on both sides has no impact on how many rows the DIMM represents.

Some motherboards are limited as to how many rows they can address. For example, if you have three slots & can only support four rows, you can install two double sided DIMMS, one double & two single, or three single. But no more than four total rows.

[EDIT]Actually, now that I think about it my first sentence may not be correct, I don't remember if logical rows are directly related to physical sides.[/EDIT]

To answer your question... I think that dimm sticks with chips only on one side always put them on the same side... but thats my observation... I could be wrong...
 
Hopefully you are able to use other slots instead of that one and that you don't have to populate the board in a certain config.
I would try running the ram in a different slot and see if you get the same error.
