Strange PS3 HDMI problem

After the latest software update my launch 60gig PS3 doesn't detect proper HDMI settings when connected to my Denon AVR-790 receiver. It works fine when connected directly to the TV. I tried setting the PS3 back to default settings and I also tried a different input on the receiver. No dice. As far as the receiver goes my HTPC is working just fine.

Thoughts? I might just say f it and use an optical cable for sound and route HDMI directly to the TV.

No expert here but did you set your audio to HDMI in the PS3 settings?

If you have more than one connector coming out of the PS3 you may need to enable Audio Multi-Ouput and Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI.

You probably need to do this if you go with your plan B. I had to do it as I need audio from all three outputs.

After resetting to default the first thing the PS3 tries to do is display setup. It prompts me that it has detected a HDMI connection and wants to setup supported resolutions. It basically fails at that point. Works fine if I connect it directly to the TV.

Stupid me, I should really try a different HDMI cable. Would be nice to be a stupid problem.

And like I said, nothing changed aside from a software update. So there's no reason it shouldn't work.

I've had the HDMI port go bad/flat out die on 3 PS3s already in the last 6 years. And 4 different receivers I've had eventually developed dead/dying HDMI ports. It's just a terribly designed and unreliable port.
