strange problem with XP

Hi,
I recently installed windows XP. The partition is supposed to be 7.8Gigs and thats exactly what windows reports. However it says that I have only about 500MB free. But when I select all files in C drive and check the properties I see that it adds up only to about 4 Gigs. I dont understand where is the remianing 3 gigs gone. I dont believe that I am actually using all 7 gigs. But I do think that I am using around 4 gigs as reported when I select all files and check the property tab. Any idea on whats going on here?
thanks

Check two things - the size of your page file and the amount of space allocated to System Restore. Both RESERVE large blocks of space on your HDD. If you have another parition, but your page/swap file on it and fix the size to something reasonable based on your real RAM. Then reduce your System Restore allocation on that drive to MINIMUM. Then see how much space you have. Also, you have a lot of system hidden files in XP. It all adds up.

how do I check the size of my page file?
And when I select all the files dont I also select the hidden files too??

To check your Page File size - go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory (that is your Page file.)

Look at the setting for Virtual Memory, and hit the Change button. That will bring up a complete menu that will let you control placement and size of the PageFile. If you have lots of RAM and don't do a lot of video editing and graphics manipulation, try the minimum at 250 and the maximum at 250, and put it where you have lots of space. It doesn't have to be on the C: partition. Any change there will require a reboot.

As for hidden files, you don't see them in Explorer unless you have specifically checked that they be shown. To expose them, go Control Panel, then Folder Options. Under the View Tab, you have to select either to show them or not show them.

yes, but you have to have them visible. goto "folder options" and make sure it's set to "show hidden files and folders" and also uncheck "hide protected operating system files (recommended)" than do a properties, this should get everything, including the swap file and the system restore files.
Something else to note, look at the "size on disk" figure not the "size" figure, this will include the HD "slack".
