Strange problem with my monitor

Sometimes my screen would get consumed by some brown stuff. Here's an artist's rendition of th eeffect, since print screen doesn't catch it (hence why I think it's a monitor issue):

Basically, these large spots appear out of the blue, flicker on the screen a little bit (getting shorter/longer, etc.), then disappear after a few seconds. They always start on the right side of the screen, and while they can vary in height and length, the large blocks tend to generally stay in their place.

Sometimes I can get rid of the effect by switching to another window or doing some action on the screen, but there's not much consistency in that.

Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Try degausing the monitor if it is a crt. If it is not and the monitor cable is detachable I would try another cable.

please list weither an LCD or CRT
