First of all my computer is home built, about 3 or 4 years old I believe.
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb Motherboard
1GB (512MB x2) Kingston PC3200 DDR RAM
74GB WD raptor
200GB Seagate 7200.7
ATI 9800 Pro 256 MB Graphics Card
OCZ - 450 Power Supply (replacement for the original Antec power supply)
Windows XP Home SP3
Time to upgrade, I know, but I'd like this computer to hang on for a little while if at all possible.
About 3 or 4 weeks ago I restarted my computer after it had been on for a while and at the login screen (which usually transitions directly to the desktop, as I'm the only user) an odd box popped up with a 30 second countdown timer and a message that said something along the lines of "not enough resources" and an OK button. When I click the button or when the timer runs out the
<<Userinit.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d) Click on OK to Terminate the Application.>>
message pops up. Then it freezes at the blank login screen.
Immediately I thought virus, so I turned off my computer and restarted in safe mode and ran an AVG anti-virus scan and it didn't come up with anything. I restarted my computer and it started up with no problems.
It was fine for a week or so and then the problem popped back up again. I then downloaded and ran SUPERantispyware and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which came up with few minor problems.
At this point, I learned by trial and error that I could only completely start up my computer by first booting in Safe Mode and then restarting my computer from the Safe Mode Login screen. Weird, I know. But otherwise I still got the two same messages.
During this time I ran CHKDSK on both of my hard drives, updated the drivers for my graphics card and began to restart with components missing. I found that my computer boots normally when I either left the Seagate drive's IDE cable unplugged or if I leave one stick of RAM out, leaving me with 512MB. I found this completely strange. I thought it might be a memory issue so I ran memtest86 and it came up with no problems on either stick of RAM.
Now, (with the exception of rebooting just before I posted this message, which again is completely odd and also the reason I don't have the exact first message in this post) I cannot leave my Seagate hooked up unless I boot in Safe Mode or I'll get the messages. The Safe Mode restart no longer works either with the Seagate hooked up.
I'm not really sure what the problem is, especially because it seems to happen most of the time, with rare intermittent normal start-ups.
After doing as much research as possible, I think the problem is either some sort of virus that requires something on the Seagate drive (which has mostly music, movies, etc.) or a power supply issue. I just don't understand why it happens only most of the time. I guess a reformat might be my next step.
Anybody have any sort of feedback on this? I'd appreciate any input or advice as to how I should proceed from here.
Sorry about the novel-length post!
