http://opentechinc.net/screen.jpg

it a screenshot from a friend who called me this AM with this strange pop-up message.

I think it's most likely a problem with the web page scripts but want to see if anyone can make sense of it.
She was logged into aol.com to check her email there when this pops up.

edit fixed link

I refuse to open a .doc off the Internet. Any chance you could make it an image, say... like an JPEG or GIF?

Anyway, without even looking at it, I guarantee it is the Messenger service in Windows 2000 or XP.

1.) Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> Disable the Messenger service.
2.) Install a decent firewall like Zonealarm or something.
3.) Go to GRC.Com for a SheildsUp test after he/she has done this.

She actually works at place with no firewall and a T1!!
:Q

I gave them an estimate for putting a firewall in but they are "waiting a bit" so if they get screwed I'm not worrying about it:)

Or it could just be AOL... :)

I am no programmer, but I think that is C or C++ (maybe even Java) source in the window. He/she does not appear to be running a firewall locally on the PC, so that is recommended to begin with.

If they can afford a T1, then even a $70 consumer grade router/nat/gateway would "help" tremendiously and would not call for a Chapter 11 filing. But, long term they should aqcuire something more robust.

It's JavaScript. I really doubt the machine has been hacked. As you see in the picture, an assertion failed. Assertions are a common thing in C and C++ programming. Basically, if an assertion is reached, and the condition it specifies is not true at that point in the program, the program crashes and prints a message saying the assertion failed. I'm guessing that AOL has made assertions in their JavaScript that pop up a dialog box if they fail. I wouldn't worry too much.

Cool, I was thinking it was a scripting problem with the page, but wanted to be sure.

Yes they should have a firewall, I have told them that, but maybe they can "afford" it in a few weeks.

I don't know how they afford not to

Sheesh, at the store I work for even thought we only have 128KBs DSL I bought a solid firewall...
